A U.S.-bound Continental Airlines Boeing 777 aircraft made an emergency landing at Ben-Gurion International Airport on today after the flight crew noticed smoke after takeoff.
Flight #085, with about 280 passengers on board, took off from Ben-Gurion at 12:03 p.m. Five minutes later, pilots told air traffic control that smoke had been detected in the area of the plane’s rear kitchen. The plane turned around and safely landed at Ben-Gurion at 12:37 p.m.
A check found that the smoke had been caused by a hot oven that that no fire took place.
A passenger on the plane told Haaretz that shortly after takeoff the flight crew informed the passengers that smoke had been detected and that the plane would be returning to Ben-Gurion.
“We were in the air for about half an hour,” the passenger said after the emergency landing. “On the ground, we saw many rescue personnel. It seems like there was a lot of drama eventhough nothing happened. We want to takeoff to the U.S.”
