US Officials: Even If Israel Doesn’t Like It, Palestinians Will Get State

obama-netanyahu-abbasAmerican officials directly involved in the failed Israeli-Palestinian peace process over the last nine months gave a leading Israeli columnist a withering assessment of Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu’s handling of the negotiations, indicated that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has completely given up on the prospect of a negotiated solution, and warned Israel that the Palestinians will achieve statehood come what may – either via international organizations or through violence.

Speaking on condition of anonymity to Nachum Barnea, a prominent columnist from Israel’s daily Yediot Acharonot, the officials highlighted Netanyahu’s ongoing settlement construction as the issue “largely to blame” for the failure of Secretary of State John Kerry’s July 2013-April 2014 effort to broker a permanent peace accord.

They made plain that President Barack Obama had been prepared to release spy-for-Israel Jonathan Pollard to salvage the talks. And they warned that “the world will not keep tolerating the Israeli occupation.”

Barnea, who described his conversations with the American officials as “the closest thing to an official American version of what happened” in the talks, said the secretary is now deciding whether to wait a few months and try to renew the negotiating effort or to publicize the US’s suggested principles of an agreement.

Detailing how the US sought to solve disputes over the core issues of a two-state solution, Barnea wrote on Friday that, “Using advanced software, the Americans drew a border outline in the West Bank that gives Israel sovereignty over some 80 percent of the settlers that live there today. The remaining 20 percent were meant to evacuate. In Jerusalem, the proposed border is based on Bill Clinton’s plan – Jewish neighborhoods to Israel, Arab neighborhoods to the Palestinians.”

He quoted the Americans saying that while the Israeli government made no response to the American plan, and also failed to draw its own border outline, Abbas agreed to the US-suggested border outline.

The Americans said they had intended to begin the nine-month negotiating period with an Israeli announcement of a settlement freeze. But this proved impossible, an American official was quoted saying, “because of the current makeup of the Israeli government, so we gave up… We didn’t realize [that] continuing construction allowed ministers in [Netanyahu’s] government to very effectively sabotage the success of the talks. There are a lot of reasons for the peace effort’s failure, but people in Israel shouldn’t ignore the bitter truth: the primary sabotage came from the settlements. The Palestinians don’t believe that Israel really intends to let them found a state when, at the same time, it is building settlements on the territory meant for that state. We’re talking about the announcement of 14,000 housing units, no less. Only now, after talks blew up, did we learn that this is also about expropriating land on a large scale. That does not reconcile with the agreement.

“At this point, it’s very hard to see how the negotiations could be renewed, let alone lead to an agreement,” the Americans continued. “Towards the end, Abbas demanded a three-month freeze on settlement construction. His working assumption was that if an accord is reached, Israel could build along the new border as it pleases. But the Israelis said no.”

The Americans told Barnea that, in contrast to the hitherto unclear reports of whether the US was prepared to release American-Israeli spy Pollard to salvage the talks from collapse in recent weeks, Obama was willing “to prepare for Jonathan Pollard’s release. Such a move wouldn’t have helped his popularity in the American security system… There was a massive effort on our part to pull the wagon out of the deep quicksand it was stuck in. But the reality here hit us hard. Neither side had a sense of urgency. Kerry was the only one who felt a sense of urgency, and that was not enough.”

One bitter American official told Barnea, “I guess we need another intifada to create the circumstances that would allow progress.”

A third intifada, the Americans made clear, “would be a tragedy. The Jewish people are supposed to be smart; it is true that they’re also considered a stubborn nation. You’re supposed to know how to read the map: In the 21st century, the world will not keep tolerating the Israeli occupation. The occupation threatens Israel’s status in the world and threatens Israel as a Jewish state.”

  1. This is the beginning of the end of relationship between Israel and the US. We are in deep trouble and need heavenly help.

  2. This is how low “American officials” have fallen. If you, the reader, voted for Obama, some of this is your fault.

  3. “One bitter American official told Barnea, “I guess we need another intifada to create the circumstances that would allow progress”

    What?

  4. (One bitter American official told Barnea, “I guess we need another intifada to create the circumstances that would allow progress.”)

What mashugana would actually believe that circumstance would Ever lead to “progress”. I suspect this is just Another tactic to coerce submission.

  5. I guess we need another administration to create the circumstances that would bring peace to the middle east and to rhe world.Who are these annonamous voices who claim to know what Israels status in “the world”is ?Why dont they make themselvs known to “the world?”

  6. I agree with number 9 Israel should be making every attempt to stall so that final status matters are ensured by a U.S.government that has proven itself to be worthy of our trust. The same can be said about the Israeli Government only someone truly trusted like Menachem Begin could bring any sort of peace.

  7. Torah Law Speaks: The following is the definitive verdict of our Divine Torah law, as expressed in the Shulchan Aruch.(11) If a band of idolators have surrounded a Jewish City (on the Shabbos), if their intention is only to rob, we may not desecrate the shabbos to defend our property. If their intention is to kill – or even if their intention is unknown, but there is reason to suspect that it might be to kill – then, even if they have not yet arrived, but are only preparing their attack, we are to go forth against them with weapons and we may desecrate the Shabbos for this purpose. However, if the city in question is close to the coast, then even where their intention is only to rob ‘straw and stubble’, we desecrate the Shabbos to defend the city against them, for if we will not do so, they might capture this (strategic) city – and from there it might be easy for them to conquer the land.
The ruling is clear, and the current circumstances in the Middle East are far more severe than those portrayed in the above passage, for the following reasons: First, every point on the map of the Holy Land, every settlement, can be considered as “a city close to the coast (or border)” due to the extremely vulnerable nature of Israel’s geography. An enemy could obviously conquer the hinterland far more easily once it has captured any strong point near the border. Second, there is no question of the invading enemies having their eyes only on despoiling “straw and stubble”; they announce their murderous goals very openly! A question could be posed about this Torah ruling. The desire is to rescue the Jews from the hands of their enemies. Since we are the “smallest of all the nations”, we need the Al-mighty’s help in our battle. If so, why should we take weapons and desecrate the Shabbos? Should we not better recite Tehillim (Psalms) for our deliverance, or engage in Torah Study etc.? The unequivocal ruling of the Shulchan Aruch is resoundingly clear. The Al-mighty desires that, in this case, we should go forth against them well armed, and, if necessary, we are to desecrate the Shabbos for this purpose. The course of action mandated by the Torah is one manner of serving G-d. Just as one must study Torah and fulfill the Mitzvos so must he perform his bounden duty with regard to the prevention of danger to life.

  8. The Land of Israel is an eternal inheritance given to the eternal people by the Eternal G-d Who is the supreme King of Kings of all countries of the world

  9. Why do we the Israelis have to ‘trade’ for Pollard?
Is he being used as a pawn?
If he can be released rightfully, let them do so.

  10. It is sad that the Jewish community in the United States is still bowing to Obama and his government officials. But remember who went to the gala during Purim in Persia during Haddas(Esther) time with King Averorosh(?) and how Mordicai had to remind people about this. So now I ask will Mordicai please stand up and save the people again.

  11. You may dislike it, but in Europe the status of Israel has declined since Netanyahu´s first rise to power. Even real friends of Israel are beginning to rise their voices in public against the Israeli governments actions in what every European contry either calls Palestine or The occupied territories.
Boycotts are no longer exclusively a question about settlement products but also products from all over Israel. The ordinary customer does not make any difference between products from Israel or the disputed areas.

  12. Every Jew, especially the “frum” ones, who voted for this soneh Yisrael need to do teshuva AND have their heads examined. How could you?!

  13. Unconfirmed reports by anonymous sources and it gets 17 comments????

Commenters #5, #8 and #17: I have absolutely no regrets about my two Obama votes. Had McCain won, the US would probably have invaded a half dozen countries by now and as a result the economy would be like 1933. Had Romney won, his budget cuts would have had the same effect.

  14. With this being the situation, how can we expect the situation to get any better? how many times recently has Hashem sent up wake-up calls to do teshuva? have we been changing our ways back towards Hashem & doing teshuva? So how can you expect to be surprised when we go from a tragic situation & it gets worse & becomes horrific?

It makes me sad to write this but we all know its the truth…
