yisroel-becher[Video below.] Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin and President Shimon Peres hosted a group of 20 Israeli teenagers in the Knesset after Tu B’Shevat, encouraging the teens to take part in Israeli public ervice. The students were invited to morning debates as part of the Knesset’s 61st birthday celebration.

Some of the students were given the opportunity to make one-minute speeches, which they used to urge Knesset members to focus on issues of importance to them. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, Opposition Leader Tzipi Livni, Rivlin, Peres, and others were present for the speeches.

One of the students was chareidi. Yisroel Aryeh Leib Bachar, a 16-year-old boy from a Lubavitcher family from Givat Ze’ev, discussed the great importance of taking time to do physical or spiritual good for another Jew. He quoted the Lubavitcher Rebbe and encouraged Knesset members to be sure their focus is on giving to the Israeli public, and told them that “together we will bring the real and full geulah very soon.”

Yisroel Aryeh was introduced by MK Nissim Ze’ev of Shas. He learns in Beitar and returned to yeshiva right after the event.

After the speeches, President Peres encouraged the students to “take part in political life.  Prime Minister Netanyahu told them that he is “willing to bet” that in a few years’ time, at least one of them will become a Knesset member.

Following the event, a lunch was held, as well as a tefillah service at the Knesset shul.

The newspaper of the Eidah Hachareidis strongly criticized the Degel Hatorah party for arranging for Yisroel Aryeh Leib to address the Knesset.

The following is a transcript of Yisroel Aryeh’s remarks:

  1. Haha, why did you cut off the part at the end where he speaks of “bekarov Mamash” which we all know what they are referring to: not “mamash”, but “mamas”h”.

  2. To #1: This bochur did a big kiddush Hashem, and all you can complain about it is Bitul Torah. Why can’t you see the good? How cynical.

  3. To: # 1

Get off the web, Mr. Bitul Torah.
If it is forbidden to enter, than Charedi knesset members should also stay out… if they can do it for monetary purposes, then surely bringing in the devar Hashem can’t hurt.

  4. Whether or not a chabad bochur addresses the knesset is shaaloh for rabbonei chabad b-eretz hakodesh in conjunction with the hanholo of the bochur’s yeshiva. It is not subject to polls, editorial or outside batei dinim-unless the rabbonei chabad choose to consult with them
