yair-lapid[Video below.] The 19th Knesset’s first summer session today turned into a barbed verbal bout between Finance Minister Yair Lapid and charedi Knesset members.

Answering charedi criticism of the impending budget cuts, Lapid cynically said: “I understand you’re going through tough times. Weren’t you sitting in the government which created the deficit? Where you on Mars? You were in every government, and you were costly partners.”

Following the stormy debate, the Knesset rejected six no-confidence motions, with 43 voting in favor and 63 against.

To MK Meir Porush (United Torah Judaism), who mentioned the drop in enlistment rates in his speech before Lapid’s turn at the podium, the finance minister responded: “You were impudent enough to come here and say the main issue in Israel is the security issue and that you’re worried over the drop in the enlistment rate.

“You are worried? I want to tell you, sir – don’t worry yourself. This government will take care that. There’ll be plenty of new recruits right out of your backyard.”

As his speech progressed, Lapid was constantly heckled by the charedi MKs, to which he responded in kind.

To a heckling Moshe Gafni, a United Torah Judaism MK, Lapid responded: “We’re tired of taking your orders. Israel doesn’t belong to you.”

The pointed exchange continued when Lapid reminded the charedi MKs of parental responsibilities.

“Our duty is to make sure no child goes hungry,” Lapid said. “But I want to remind you of one thing: The body that’s responsible for providing for children is called ‘their parents.’ When you bring a child to this world, MK Porush, you’re the first person responsible for him.”

Lapid was interrupted by MK Yisrael Eichler, who shouted: “We’ll not let you take the money from the children.”

Lapid answered: “MK Eichler, I heard you called for a tax rebellion. What will you threaten next, that charedim will not enlist? What are you talking about?”

Lapid’s Facebook habits also came under fire, when a charedi MK criticized him for posting online on Shabbos. Lapid replied: “I post on Shabbat because I don’t keep the Shabbat. I’m not telling you what to do on the Shabbat and you won’t tell me.”

To Meretz Chairwoman Zahava Gal-On, who condemned the lack of progress in the peace process, Lapid replied: “The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been going on for 150 years. I’m sorry we didn’t solve it on our first week in office.”

The finance minister presented the new budget plan earlier on Monday to Prime Minister  Netanyahu.

The plan includes an NIS 18 billion (about $5 billion) cut in government spending, with the main brunt carried by the defense establishment, the children stipends, state employees’ salaries and a freeze on infrastructure projects.

In addition, the plan contains a 1% raise of the VAT and another 1% raise for incomes above NIS 8,881 ($2,449).

Earlier, Lapid said during his party’s meeting that “We’ll not hide behind the deficit but quite the opposite; we’ll view it as an opportunity to change priorities for the State of Israel.”

Lapid added: “Our heart goes out to anyone who can’t make ends meet, but empathy can’t replace policy. In two years every Israeli will feel the change, feel that he lives in a fair state which treats his money with respect.”

MK Porush, of United Torah Judaism, slammed the government’s policy and Lapid in his Knesset speech: “I heard he’s going to hit Israel with unbearable economic measures.

“This is a government which is built on hate alone. The highest of this government’s achievements is exclusion of the charedim.”

  1. Rabbi Goldstein,

The Jewish State was built upon the blood sweat and tears of people who fought and died for Klal Yisroel. Your nonchalant attitude is offensive to the problems at hand and prevents finding solutions. Once again deal with the issues. These issues are real.

  2. “Ben Adom l’Chavero” at its best.

Budget, budget and budget,,,,easier to spend than to save, the story of life.

  3. hashem has a plan.

We dont understand how Lapid can have the leadership. But all this is a blessing. They will all one day realize that Torah is what truly has been the protection for klal yisroel, not the missiles.

do they forget that when Moshe Rabenu lowered his hands klal yisroel would loss against Amalek ut when his hands were raised , klal yisroel would win. its not the swords..or guns , tanks or fighter jets or the arrow missiles. Its the Tefillah and Torah just like Moshe was doing -raising his hands to shamayim.

Lapid is a fool as are the others who are blinded from emes.

  4. sorry Lapid – but Eretz Yisroel was given to the Yidden by Hashem and not to the eirav rav and it belongs to Yiddish and Torah observing Yidden

  5. They are now awakening to a new Eretz Yisroel. The are realizing more and more every day that their old tactics no longer work.

  6. Wake up and smell the coffee! The vast majority of Israelis support the new government! In fact, polls show that if new elections were held, Lapid and Bennett’s parties would win MORE seats than they have now.

The handwriting is on the wall.

  7. Lapid wants to crush the poor to fund his holidays. We’ll see where these extra taxes will be funnelled to,,, lets check his credentials.

  8. Judaism will continue, and will continue to thrive, Be”H. Does anyone remember Tommy Lapid or any of the other reshaim who got some temporary fame.

Yes, so what did Tommy Lapids government accomplish. He kept UTJ out of the coalition. He sought to spend all sorts of money on “the arts” and other clowny stuff. He’s gone, but the guys in Gush Katif, have been thrown out. Similar measures can now be expected.

  9. We all remember Yair Lapids father Reb Tommy Lapid who won 15 seats for his anti torah Shinui party in January ’03 and by the next election in March ’06 he was off the map!!

  10. I think you’ll all find that the Chareidim (99% of them) did NOT want Palestine under the British rule to be given to Jews. Only after it was, did 98% of them agreed to the Bedieved situation.

  11. to all you “the truth hurts” people: The chareidim are not the source of all of Israel’s problems. A lie repeated enough times will be believed. I’d like to remind all the viewers who share the same hashkafa which Matzav represents (not Moshe Levy and his hatikvah band) that Rav Nissan Karletz said that we should make sure to answer (honestly of course) all these ridiculous statements – to ourselves and for ourselves. And let the “truth tellers” and the Lapid loving Moshe Levy’s find themselves a nice cleab forum – with their own hashkafas – good luck!

  12. What a chutzpan! The gall to tell the Jews that Israel doesn’t belong to them, but he actually thinks it belongs to him and his ilk, the Erev Rav? He is the epitome of one. Very suspicious how he and this new party made such a big hit. Either the public is that stupid or lot of monkey business. Believe his father was promised that his son will continue his ambition of getting rid of Jews in Israel.
