marathon1[Video below.] Among the 40,000 New York City marathoners yesterday, there was one wealthy former businessman-turned-mayor who now runs one of the most complex cities in the world. No, it was not Mayor Bloomberg. That was Mayor Nir Barkat of Yerushalayim, whose supporters like to cast him as “the Israeli Bloomberg” for his background in high-tech and his businessman’s approach to governing.Barkat said he’s celebrating his 50th birthday by running the 26.2-mile race, which seems like an apt metaphor for the many long-running challenges he faces every day as mayor of his ancient city.

“I always view things long-term,” said Barkat, who was elected mayor a year ago. Barkat’s decision to jump into the ING New York City Marathon drew a shout-out from the real Mayor Bloomberg, 67.

“If you can run Jerusalem, you can run the New York City marathon,” Bloomberg said.

“I have to admit, I love New York,” Barkat said. “I think there are many things that we can learn here.”

Meb Keflezighi has become the first American man to win the New York City Marathon since 1982.

Keflezighi, the 2004 Olympic silver medalist, earned his first major marathon title yesterday. Born in Eritrea, the 34-year-old became a U.S. citizen in 1998.

He was second in New York in 2004 and third in 2005. Keflezighi, wearing “USA on his chest, won in 2 hours, 9 minutes, 15 seconds.

Four-time Boston Marathon champ Robert Cheruiyot of Kenya was second. Morocco’s Jaouad Gharib finished third and American Ryan Hall was fourth. American Alberto Salazar won three straight NYC Marathons from 1980-82.

Derartu Tulu of Ethiopia was the women’s winner, with 41-year-old Russian Ludmila Petrova the runner-up for the second straight year.

A number of Neturei Karta radicals showed up at the marathon as well. Click below to watch:

  1. When moshiach comes acorrding to Nk what will happen to our brothers the wonderful and opressed Palistinian people, the ones who have inhabited the land, the ones who the Bais Hamikdash was built on there teritory! oh no, thank goodness it was destroyed! it was a war crime!

  2. They send like little kids – that is what we did in camp – I don’t know why we have to give them attention at all. Just ignore them.

  3. OILAM HAFUCH RAISI; BIRKAT IS THE GOOD GUY !
MECHALEL SHABOS / CHAZER FRESSER / MOISER ETC ……….., WE SHOULD ALL BE THERE WITH THE N.K.

  4. to Dovid; Who says they were actually looking at the runners? They feel rightfully so that Eretz Yisroel was not ours to take and make a government in, until Moshiach comes. I don’t agree with them that the Palestinians are oppressed and I believe that they are a wicked bunch. They feel if they don’t protest then Hashem may take them to task for it. When you see someone doing an aveiro you are supposed to reprimand him.

  5. Why r u showing these nuts. “Rabbi” Moshe Dovid Beck YM”S should go down in the ground six feet below. I feel like throwing-up after watching that video.
