bmg-chavrusah-tumult[Video and photos below.] A large crowd gathered yesterday at Beth Medrash Govoha in Lakewood, NJ, to kick off the tri-annual chavrusah tumult which takes place before each zeman – winter, spring, and at the beginning of Chodesh Elul. Chavrusah tumult is geared for the many new bochurim and yungeleit who have joined the yeshiva, as well as current talmidei hayeshiva in need of new chavrusos. With beautiful weather and sunny skies, thousands of talmidim of North America’s largest yeshiva went about finding chavrusos for this coming zeman.

The tumult will continue no later than today for first seder and tomorrow for second seder. Special yeshiva-appointed individuals have been on hand to assist talmidim in arranging chavrusos.

The organization of chaburos, meaning the group with which one will be learning, for first seder will take place tomorrow and hachzokas mekomos – the finalizing of seats – will take place Sunday. For second seder, the organization of chaburos will take place this Sunday and hachzokas mekomos will take place on Monday.

The official yeshiva mesechta for first seder is Maseches Nedarim. During second seder, the limud is Maseches Shavuos. As usual, the chaburos in Bais Eliyahu and Bais Shalom – two of the botei medrash of Beth Medrash Govoha – will cover the gamut of Shas and poskim, offering many options for yungeleit to choose from.

  1. Wow! So many bnei Torah and we’re still having problems with shidduchim and not enough good boys! How is that possible?

  2. Can someone explain to me the real Tachlis of this “Minhag” called a Chavrusa Tumult? What REALLY goes on by this? Can it be that a guy is showing up without a clue as to who his Chavrusos will be? Don’t all of them know who they want to learn with and have everything arranged before the Zman starts? Are there really people walking around and going over to people they do not know and asking them “Do you want to learn with me”?

I was never at one of these and would really like to know and understand what it is

    Thank you

  3. I don’t understand what the big draw is. Isn’t there any guidance in finding a chabura? It’s beautiful to see so many bnei Torah. However, after seeing this “tumult” I can see why it’s not for everybody. A shame there are so few places for an older boy to learn and I wonder how many are there b/c there are no other yeshivas for them.
