In a meeting of pure Hashgachah, Yerushalayim Mayor Nir Barkat happened to meet Jonathan Pollard and his wife Esther today at a café in New York during Barkat’s visit to the Big Apple for a fundraising event. Barkat, who was greatly moved to meet the former Israeli spy who had spent 30 years in prison until this past November, promptly took the golden Yerushalayim pin he was wearing on his lapel and affixed it to Jonathan’s suspenders.
“If Jonathan is not allowed to come to Yerushalayim, Yerushalayim will come to him,” said the mayor, “We long for the day when you will be able to come to Yerushalayim and make it your true home.”
Pollard’s parole terms forbid him from leaving the United States for a period of five years.

Kudos to Barkat for his quick thinking, and his expression of recognition for all that Pollard suffered for the people of Eretz Yusrael.
