rav-chaim-kanievsky1[Video and photos below.] Rav Chaim Kanievsky, renowned for his hasmada, yedios haTorah and tzidkus, has always eschewed materialistic items, choosing to live with simplicity and rarely acquiring new items for his household. It was thus somewhat of an event when Rav Chaim received a new becher this month. Rav Aharon Binah, rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Netiv Aryeh, who had tried to give Rav Chaim a new becher in the past, finally succeeded.

Two weeks ago, Rav Chaim made Kiddush on his old silver becher, when wine began seeping from it. At that point, Rav Chaim agreed that he could no longer use it and would use a new one.

Rav Binah honored Rav Chaim with a beautiful new silver becher.

Rav Chaim used the becher for the first time last Motzoei Shabbos, Parshas Bereishis, to make Havdalah.

Rav Chaim made Havdalah using wine, rather than grape juice. It is known that Rav Chaim feels this is preferable, and he often tells those who come to him for a bracha to have a baby boy to follow this as a segulah and use wine for kiddush rather than mitz anavim.

The new becher was very large, however, and, since Rav Chaim is makpid to drink rov kos as mandated by halacha, drinking that much wine has a strong effect on the drinker. Thus, on Erev Shabbos, Rav Binah returned with two other bechers, the same design as the first but a bit smaller.

Rav Chaim used one of those bechers for the first time to make Havdalah last night, after which he ate melava malka.

Family members are reportedly vying for the zechus to use Rav Chaim’s old becher, thought it has not been decided yet who will merit to receive the becher of this gadol b’Yisroel.

It is interesting to note that about one year ago, the becher which Rav Chaim Kanievsky used to make kiddush every Shabbos was stolen from his house on Rechov Rashbam in Bnei Brak. At the time, a chareidi-looking Jew came to Rav Chaim’s houseand asked family members if he could see the becher upon which Rav Chaim recites kiddush. When the becher was shown to him, the man exclaimed that it is such a pity that the venerated gadol should make a bracha on such a tarnished becher. He explained that he had a special way of restoring old bechers to their original beauty. He then pulled out a new becher from his pocket, explaining that it would take him a few days to fix the old one, and Rav Chaim could make kiddush on the new becher while his becher was being cleaned. The man said that it would be an honor for him to take back the new becher, a becher upon which Rav Chaim would have made kiddush once, as a memento upon return of the old becher. The man never returned and it was believed that the man stole the becher so that he could sell it for a fortune on the Judaica market.

At the time, Rav Chaim was reportedly very pained by the loss of the becher and he told a family member that the person who took it has “the din of a ganav.”

It is not clear, and we have not been able to verify, whether the becher that Rav Chaim just stopped using was actually that stolen becher that had been returned or if it was a different becher of his.

  1. What should have been just a normal event is now being covered like a news story?
Why can’t R’ Chaim buy a kos without press coverage?

  2. To no 3… surely any video of a Godol Batorah is worth seeing, and I agree with no 1 it is interesting to see that Rav Kanievsky drank only a sip.

  3. WHAT’S HAPPENING TO US????
Are we now becomming like the chsids? why are we busy with such stupidity all day?
We should be learning and interested in how many blat gemorah The Gadol Hador learned today, How shtark were his chidushim,. If we go down this road, who knows where this is going to lead us!

  4. I am surprised to see that he uses a becher with a stem. Many Rabbonim prefer a becher without a stem so that they may place it directly on the palm of their hand in keeping with the posuk ” and he placed the cup on Parohs palm.”

  5. what shaiches to the jewish world @ you fingertips? and to #1 it says that he prefers wine and mayb it’s dangerous for him to drink too much
