rav-don[Video and photos below.] This past Monday night, the Lakewood community was honored to host Rav Don Segal, the renowned mashgiach from Eretz Yisroel, who served as the keynote speaker at the annual Lakewood asifah for Keren Birchas Shmuel L’Hachzokas Bnei Torah, which assists bnei Torah in Eretz Yisroel. The event was held at Bais Faiga Hall with the participation of the four Lakewood roshei yeshiva, Rav Malkiel Kotler, Rav Dovid Schustal, Rav Yeruchem Olshin and Rav Yisroel Neuman, as well as other notable rabbonim and roshei yeshiva, and hundreds of bnei Torah.

The evening began with remarks from the chairman, Rabbi Menashe Frankel, who spoke about the vital activities of the Keren, which was founded six years ago by Rav Dovid Schustal. Since that time, the Keren has distributed much-needed assistance to over 6,000 yungeleit in Eretz Yisroel before Yom Tov. In the last 6 years, the Keren has distributed over 50,000 checks totaling over $20 million. This fund was started in response to government cutbacks of monthly stipends. The monies, which are distributed directly to the yungeleit, helped cover the gap.

Rabbi Frankel told the audience that Rav Shmuel Berenbaum zt”l, the Mirrer rosh yeshiva, played an active role in the Keren, even traveling with tremendous mesiras nefesh to attend an asifa for the Keren shortly before his petirah. It was to be one of his last public appearances. Rav Shmuel insisted that the number of shekalim disbursed to each yungerman should remain constant despite the falling dollar.

Despite the added expenses, the Keren is committed to following the rosh yeshiva’s mandate.

Rabbi Frankel added that the strong support of the Lakewood kehillah is a critical component of the Keren’s success. Aside from the actual funds raised, it’s a tremendous chizuk to other benefactors when they see how the yungeleit in Lakewood respond to the plight of their fellow yungeleit in Eretz Yisroel.

The second speaker was Rav Dovid Schustal. Then, following the recital of Tehillim led by Rav Aharon Schustal, the gathered crowd welcomed Rav Segal. During his remarks, Rav Segal touched on the timely topics of teshuvah and introspection, providing words of inspiration and guidance in preparation for the upcoming Yemei Hadin. Rav Segal also galvanized the kehillah members to do whatever they can to help their fellow bnei Torah in Eretz Yisroel during these tough economic times.
