menorah-moldova[Video below.] Dozens of people led by a priest smashed a menorah in Moldova’s capital capital Chisinau, using hammers and iron bars to remove the menorah during Chanukah, officials said. The 5-foot-tall ceremonial menorah was retrieved, reinstalled and is now under police guard.

Police said they were investigating but there was no official reaction from Moldova’s Orthodox Church, which is part of the Russian Orthodox Church and counts 70 percent of Moldovans as members.

The national government said in a statement that “hatred, intolerance and xenophobia” are unacceptable.

Jewish leader Alexandr Bilinkis called on the Orthodox Church to take a position over the priest’s actions.

The Jewish community was thriving before World War II but there are now estimated to be just 12,000 Jews in the former Soviet Republic. Twenty years ago there were 66,000 Jews. Many immigrated to Israel.

  1. HaHa!
the’re so proud of themselves, they think wer’e all crying.
The problem for us is when the goyim DON’T want to destroy our Menorah.

  2. This video is not shocking and reveals nothing our People have not known for thousands of years.

The question is this: When will that misguided branch of Judaism finally learn that we are in Galus and have no right to foist our religious practices upon the outside world?

When will they finally realize that parades of cars with Menorahs on their roofs, creating traffic jams on busy public streets, only serves to foment hate?

When will they stop with nonsense and involving goyim in mitzvos that pertain only to Jews, and instead focus inward on their Jewish outreach and do what they do best?

The tragedy in Mumbai helped us to remember that these are our brothers and they are wonderful, selfless Jews. Let us not slip back in to the “ignore them they aren’t us” mode that was our approach to Chabad for so long. We must urge the talmidei chachamim amongst them to speak out and asert their leadership of this shepherdless flock.

  3. WOW! This was a scene like out of a story book rom one hundred years ago. Very sad, scary and sick…. Although I agree with every comment above me(1-4) THIS IS SCARY AND SAD. Yemach Shemom. Dechei Admon.. Hokem lanu roei shiva bemehaira!

  4. “We must urge the talmidei chachamim amongst them to speak out and asert their leadership of this shepherdless flock.”

They are following what their Rebbe taught them. I don’t think they will suddenly change.

We have to make clear to people that their sect is not mainstream Yiddishkeit and doesn’t represent us or the majority of religious Jews.

  5. How did this turn into an attack on Lubavitch? If you look closely that is NOT a Lubavitch Menorah. More likely, it is one that “The Jewish Community” erected.

Our response to seeing a video such as this should be: “Shfoch Chamoscha el hagoyim” with the stress on the word GOYIM!!

To be sure, there are times that Lubavitch does indeed deserve our condemnation. Not this time.

  6. #10, Lubavitch are THE only group that display Menorah’s publicly. Bare in mind there is a big difference between a shul that has a menorah on their property versus in the public square. Chabad are alone in this. It only infuriates them. Understand that the mitzva of pirsumei nisa, is in ones private house. Nowhere is it mentioned that menorahs be placed in public areas.

  7. with comments like these no wonder why we are constantly getting reminders where we are.
this was a cities menorah and a blatant anti semitic act by some hooligans in moldovia.
the chutzpah of anyone to connect this to the chabad way of life and be mekatreg an entire sect of yidden.Wow!!!!
We truely are our own worst enemy :<(
I hope moshiach comes really quickly

  8. I have a feeling those thugs are really some of the above commenters in disguise venting their rage on Chabad… Get a life guys!!

  9. #11 you have no idea what u r talking about!
have you ever heard of the jewish agency and sachnut and all the other programs that are involved in some sort of way with the jews in the old ussr!i cant believe how u can post comments like these that are blatant loshon hora and motzai shem ra birabim no less!!!!!!!
to think that that was a chabad doing.its not even their type of menorah!!!please be more responsible with your comments especially in a public forum as this is!!

Its sad that you actually believe that concealing our Jewishness from the world, sacrificing the assimilated Jews among us throughout the world, is the answer to antisemitism. How Naive can you be? Where have you been all these years? Have you not studied any history? The Jews have been, are and will continue to be the focus of attention in the world. Haman and Hitler yemach shemam wanted to kill the Jews no matter observant or assimilated. Your battle cry for Chabad to turn inward is just hiding behind the sad truth that you and many others like you are not secure or confident in your Jewishness and observance in the face of the world. We say in the Haggaddah, “Shelo echad bilvad omad aleinu lecha’aloseinu etc,… was the problem throughout history that Jews flaunted their Jewishness and as a result incited the hatred of their neighbors? Certainly not, and we both know that to be the case. Why dont you do a little introspection and be honest with yourself before portraying yourself as righteous and the know all. Fact remains that the Lubavitcher Rebbe zt”l already in his adolescents received Rabbinic ordination from the famed Rogatchover Gaon and possessed encyclopedic knowledge of every Jewish manuscript as relayed by people such as the late Rav Pinchas Hirschpruntg who had many long Torah conversations with him. If he were around today, there is no doubt in my mind that you would even approach him in question neither any of his Shluchim who arte selflessly carrying his torch and perpetuating his warmth and guidance. Enough with the infighting, have we not witnessed enoufgh tragedy and bloodshed from amongst our people! Dont you think we have our hands full with our true adversaries. If you want to back us then you are welcome and we would respect you for it but the Gemara says, Ein Kateigar na’aseh Saneigar so please choose a path and stick to it.

  11. To all those knocking Lubavitch:

As it was already pointed out, it was not a Lubavitch Menorah, and apparently, they are not the ONLY ones that have it in public places. If you are not Lubavitch, you have no right argue. Do you have any idea how many thousands of people they were mekarev? And this is who you’re going against? The chutzpah. People who help the Klal like they do have special Siyata DiShmaya. How dare someone knock them like that.

    P.S. I’m not Lubavitch.

  12. This video should be seen by people around the world including Yeshivos and Bais Yaakov’s. The children of this generation have no idea how much hate there is for Klal Yisroel. They just read stories from Artscroll books. We are in the same Galus from 100 and 1000 years ago. While sentiments toward us may seem friendly and accepting the reality is Eisav Soine Yaakov and only Moshiach will end that sentiment.
    Klal Yisroel needs Yeshuos.
