rav-chaim-kanievsky[Video below.] At the bar mitzvah of his great-grandson this week, Rav Chaim Kanievsky shed tears as one of the speakers described how one woman’s exemplary behavior affected the outcome of the Six Day War.

The bar mitzvah bochur is a son of Rav Gedaliah Hoenigsberg, a grandson of Rav Shraga Shteinman, and a great-grandson of Rav Aharon Leib Shteinman and Rav Chaim Kanievsky.

At the bar mitzvah in Bnei Brak, the aforementioned speaker, Rav Eliyahu Mann, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivas Bais Hillel and one of Rav Chaim’s closest confidantes, related that during the Six Day War, Rav Chaim Shmulevitz zt”l, Mirrer rosh yeshiva, was in a bomb shelter together with a woman whose husband had deserted her for years. She pleaded to Hashem, “I wholeheartedly forgive my husband for all he did to me. Likewise, may You forgive Klal Yisroel for their wrongdoings.” When Rav Chaim Shmulevitz heard her saying this with all her heart, he declared, “The war is over!”

As Rav Mann related this story and spoke about the trying circumstances of the current matzav in Eretz Yisroel, tears streamed down Rav Chaim’s face, as can be seen in the following stirring video:

  1. It’s was wrong to take this video and certainly wrong to post this video without permission from HaRav Kanievsky Shlit”a. There are halachos of Hezeik Re’iah and Geneivas Daas that may apply. Do Gedolim not have a right to privacy anymore?

  2. While I agree with the sentiment of #2, I would like to share a thought.
When I was newly married, I went to a chasuna of a friend of my wife’s, and I did not know anyone on the men’s side. During the seudah, I found myself watching the table with the rabbeim to observe how they conduct themselves, and I had the thought that this is also how the goyim look at us!
So yes, there is hezek re’iah, but there is also the knowledge that we as yidden among goyim, as well as those who are gedolim among yidden, are always being watched, and we have an achrayus.
While the taker of video and the poster of the video may be wrong, perhaps we should take this as appropriate mussar for ourselves instead of using it as an opportunity to find fault with others. And quite frankly, having that attidude with everything is what we need to end sinas chinam.

  4. wish we would all finally wake up & accept the message of teshuva from Hashem finally.

it brings lots of tears to me as I watch the tzaros get worse, when you know it could have ALL been avoided if we would have woken up & returned to Hashem with teshuva & achdus

Hope it happens very soon & moshiach comes before tisha b’av

  5. I agree with commenter #2:

I think what’s going on is as follows: “Some” in the “Chareidi” media feel that because there is a “perception” that Chareidim don’t have “Ahavat Yitrael” towards Chilonim, so they must go into overdrive to show every picture/video of Chareidim saying Tehillim, Davening, crying, etc… for the soldiers! This is a big mistake and must stop. The Torah doesn’t need a PR machine.

  6. I agree with Ish HaPar. We need to start giving our gedolim the respect they deserve. (We used to respect them. Why did we stop?)
If this was you crying, would you want the whole world to see it?

  7. how is that geneivas daas?
    Its inspiration!!
if you would tell r’ Chaim that the video will inspire someone, he would tell you to publish the video!!

  8. SHAME on you MATZAV you had the opportunity to be WITH Hashem & help bring klal yisroel to teshuva by posting the message I sent before, but now it will need to wait futher with more tragedies & lost lives involved R”L. how does that make you feel? that hold MATZAV responsible & requires you to beg Hasem mechila.

May Hasem for give you if you are with Hashem & try to bring his children to return to Hasem with teshuva.

  9. Am I correct in assuming that these holy defenders of privacy and kovod gedolim etc actually VIEWED the video regardless, knowing full well what they were going to see….?
