vineland-shechitahVineland Kosher Poultry has notified the state it might lay off at least 50 employees — about a quarter of itstotal work force — next month. The company on South Mill Road filed a “Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act” notice with the state Department of Labor and Workforce Development Act on Oct. 11. Companies are required to file the notice 60 days before closing a facility or laying off a significant number of employees. The layoffs would occur on Dec. 11 according to the notice.Abe Raab, administrative manager for the plant, said a decision has not been made and the notice was filed as a precaution. Increased competition in the kosher food market has caused the company to consider some changes, Raab said. The company will consider producing less volume and different types of goods, he said.

“Week by week we are making an assessment,” he said. “Some weeks it’s good and some weeks it’s bad.”

Under the WARN notice Raab lists “economic conditions” as the reason for the layoffs.

Vineland Kosher has about 150 workers, who are members of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 152, and 50 managers and rabbinical staff who oversee the food preparation.

Raab said layoffs would include a mixture of the two groups of employees.

Brian String, president of the union based in Hammonton, did not return a call seeking comment Wednesday.

Rabbi Yisroel Leifer and Vineland resident Irving Raab — Abe’s father — founded the kosher chicken plant in 1968. The company has traditionally been one of the county’s largest private employers and prepares millions of kosher chickens, turkeys and ducks every year.

  1. I suppose part of the reason is because vineland has always only used natural kosher chickens. Those which use factory farmed which are very kashrus suspect are now undercutting them.
