virginia-gov-jim-gilmoreAt the National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday, President Obama told fellow Christians that their religion had been abused and misappropriated in the past, just as Islam has been by terrorists in recent years.

“In our home country, slavery and Jim Crow all too often was justified in the name of Christ,” he said.

Critics, including many Republicans, were outraged.

“The president’s comments this morning at the prayer breakfast are the most offensive I’ve ever heard a president make in my lifetime,” former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore told The Washington Post. “He has offended every believing Christian in the United States. This goes further to the point that Mr. Obama does not believe in America or the values we all share.” Read more at The Washington Post.

  1. Oh, so burning Jews alive at the stake is OK? The Holy Inquisition torturing Jews to try and make them affirm another religion is OK? Pogroms killing Jews are OK? Kidnapping children from their families because the non-Jewish maid had them secretly baptized is OK? How many of the Nazis were members of the dominant religion?

And just in case he wants to dodge and say that “those guys” were Catholics, not good Protestants like him, he should remember that Martin Luther was one of the prize-winning anti-Semites of all time.

And let’s not forget Leo Frank hy”d, who was lynched in Georgia by a mob of good white Protestant Southerners.

  2. What is the problem? The Crusades were the Islamic State of their day; the Inquisition was equally cruel; pogroms and cooperation with the Nazis was justified and supported in the name of Christianity; and in the United States chattel slavery, the KKK, and JIm Crow were all justified by Christian scriptural interpretations. Not until less than 50 yeas ago did all Christian churches of any importence move away from such abominable interpretations of their religion.

I recite the “Av HaRachamim” prayer on Shabat in memory of the martyrs of the Crusades. I thank Barack Obama for pointing out to the ignorant and the deniers what the real nature of the Crusades.

  3. The actual facts of Obama’s statement are true, namely that Christians killed many people, including (and mainly) Jews, over the centuries. However, Christians nowadays are not killing anyone in the name of their religion. It is not fair and has no place to compare Christians to ISIS.

But the bigger issue is the message Obama is conveying. He is saying that religion as a whole is a bad thing. He ignores the fact that most of those killed in the twentieth century were killed by atheists for mainly political motives, not religious ones. In fact, more people may have been killed by those atheists than have been killed throughout history for religious reasons.
