Vizhnitz Sues NYC for ‘Unfair Crackdown’ on Chasunahs at School

boro-parkA Brooklyn yeshiva says in a new federal lawsuit that a recent city crackdown on weddings at the Jewish school is just not kosher. Yeshiva Imrei Chaim Vizhnitz in Borough Park has been able to hold weddings at its assembly hall since the 1990s.

But two years ago, the Buildings Department decided that it needed to approve the more than 150 weddings held there annually on a case-by-case basis, according to the suit in Manhattan Federal Court.

And now, the city says the yeshiva should not be hosting commercial events at all in a residential area.

“We get inspectors there at least once a week interrupting religious services,” said the yeshiva’s lawyer, Stuart Klein. “We just can’t deal with this anymore. It’s starting to affect our business.”

The yeshiva, which has more than 600 students at its 53rd St. building, says that the city has allowed other religious institutions to maintain halls without all the inspections.

“We are being subjected to a different standard than everyone else,” Klein said.

City lawyers have yet to see the lawsuit, said a law department spokeswoman. The yeshiva lost a similar case in state court.

  1. This all the fault of one who had the nerve to complain that people were parking in his driveway, smoking in his backyard, making all kinds of noise at 2 or even 3 am. The absolute unmitigated chutzpah.

  2. I don’t think that it is an “unfair crackdown”. I do not live on the block nor do I have any relatives there. I have attended a few chasunas there and the noise and the filth in the front of the buillding is a sight to behold. Perhaps the administration of the school should have some derech eretz for the people living on the block.

  3. Parking or the lack thereof (followed of course by the honking…) seems to be one of the large issues. Why don’t they make use of the lot across 18th Ave – between 52 and 53 streets for parking. If they had something like that to offer, the street would be much quieter.

  4. I know who people who live on the block. They can’t stand the hall. It is a regular BP one way street, people double park and who knows what else. This is not like a hall on a major avenue where you can somehow work around it.

  5. #1 is right
    #2 is right
    #3 is right

so you cant blame #1 because #2 and#3 are the cause

this is how i learned math in school

  6. I don’t live on the block. However, I’m appalled at the chutzpah. has taken vis-a-vis their neighbors. I walk that stretch every day and observe the noise and filth that goes on there. Like every other organization in BP, the school has the right to have a simche hall. But it behooves the administration to show courtesy to their neighbors; to have sufficient and capable security to implement noise reduction techniques, clean up after their guests, etc.

  7. I DONT LIVE ON THAT BLOCK, BUT I HAVE A FREIND WHO LIVES FOUR HOUSES AWAY. HE TELLS ME IT DOSENT BOTHER HIM AT ALL THAT THERE ARE CHASUNAS THERE. HE DOSENT EVEN HEAR NOISE FROM THE HALL (EVEN TH0UGH IT IS NOT SOUND PROOF.) HE COUDNT CARE LESS THAT THERE IS A HALL THERE. IT IS ONLY OUR (UNFORTUNALY) BNEI YISROEL WHO CANT “FAR GIN” ANOTHER MOSOD TO HAVE AN INCOME.

I LIVE ON 45 STREET BETWEEN 17 & 18 AVE, AND PARKING IS A MESS. PEPOLE GO TO LAUDAUS (EVEN THOUGH THEY HAVE THERE OWN PARKING LOT) THE WORKERS PARK ALL DAY ON THE BLOCK, NOT IN THERE PARKING LOT. AM I UPSET. SHOULD I GIVE IN A LAW SUIT TO CLOSE LANDAUS BECASE I CANT PARK???!!. NO !! IT DOSENT BOTHER ME . IF I DONT LIKE IT I COULD MOVE TO SOUTH BRONX & HAVE PLENTY OF PARKINK. OR MAYBE ILL MOVE TO MONSEY OR MONROE. OR MAYBE ILL STAY IN THE MOUNTAINS ALL YEAR & HAVE PLENT OF PARKING. (BY THE WAY IN BUNGALOW COLONY WE HAVE ALSO MANY ISSUES WITH PARKING). ALSO PEPOLE COME TO THE 18 AVE TRAIN STAION & PARK THERE CAR ALL DAY ON MY BLOCK. SO WHAT SHOULD I DO. SLASH TIRES. YELL. NO IM A YID. I I PRACTICE THAT. I KEEP QUIT. IF YOU WANT TO LIVE IN BORO PARK YOU HAVE TE BE READY FOR ANY AND ALL INCONVIENENT. AND IF YOU CANT JUST GO FLY A KITE OUT OF TOWN. HERE IS A LIST OF BLOCKS WITH PROBLEMS IN BORO PARK:
