vizhnitzer-rebbe-bnei-brakThe levaya of the Vizhnitzer Rebbe of Bnei Brak, Rav Moshe Yehoshua Hager, first slated to begin at 1 p.m., was pushed back until after 2 p.m. as family members, including the Rebbe’s sons-in-law, Rav Aharon Teitelbaum of Satmar and the Skverer Rebbe, traveled from the United States to attend. They were slated to be greeted and escorted from Ben Gurion Airport by Rabbi Meir Porush. Hundreds of police and medical personnel are ready in Bnei Brak, bracing for between 100,000 to 200,000 attendees at the levaya. Two dozen ambulances are ready to respond should they be needed.

Many streets in Bnei Brak, including Rechov Chazon Ish, have been closed to vehicular traffic. Thoroughfares in Ramat Gan have been closed as well. Many people have parked cars miles away and walked to the levaya in central Bnei Brak.

Exactly 17 years ago today, 20 Adar I, 1995, some 200,000 people attended the levaya of Rav Shlomo Zalmen Auerbach zt”l in Yerushalayim.

As reported earlier by Matzav.com Israel, Prime Minsiter Netanyahu expressed his sorrow over the petirah, and Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin opened today’s Knesset session with remarks regarding the Rebbe and the void left with his passing.

Over five dozen busses left from Yerushalayim for the levaya, and busses have been arranged from Modiin Illit, Haifa, Elad, Bet Shemesh, Ashdod and elsewhere – a total of some 400-450 busses.

Egged’s director for the chareidi sector, Reb Yitzchok Rudich, a Vizhnitzer chossid, is overseeing the arrangements.

Business in Bnei Brak are closed for the duration of the levaya.

The aron is being carried only by those over age 40 who immersed in a mikvah today.

Once source reports that Rav Gershon Edelstein, rosh yeshiva at Ponovezh, told talmidim to participate in the levaya even if it means taking away time from learning.

The levaya, including the kevurah, is slated to be completed before shkiah, which is at approximately 6 p.m. Only family members will be allowed into the bais hakevaros.

Update, 3:23 p.m. IL: Attendees at the levaya include the admorim of Sanz, Slonim and Nadvorna, Rav Aharon Leib Shteinman, Rav Meir Tzvi Bergman, Rav Berel Povarsky, Rav Gershon Edelstein, Rav Asher Weiss, Rav Shmuel Yaakov Borenstein, and others.

The levaya commenced without the Belzer Rebbe, who arrived shortly thereafter. Rav Yisroel Hager and Rav Mendel Hager tore kriah, as did Vizhnitzer Chassidim across the city. Rav Aharon of Satmar and the Skverer Rebbe were en route to Bnei Brak from the airport. They will likely be going straight to the bais hachaim.

  3. Why is there no mention of who the new Rebbe will be? Rav Yisroel is the oldest and since returning from golus has risen to be considerd the heir apparent. Rav Mendel is said to be slated to head up the Vizhnitzer Kehila
