Senator Bill Nelson of Florida told reporters in front of Orlando’s Pulse nightclub that the shooter responsible for the deadliest mass murder in American history at that club Sunday morning was a “lone wolf,” and he could not confirm “with certainty” that Islamic jihadist ideology led the shooter to perform his crime.

“It’s hard to be 100 percent when you are dealing with a lone wolf,” Senator Nelson told reporters before being approached by Tom Trento of the United West, who asked the Senator plainly whether “the ideology of Islamic jihad” drove Omar Saddiqui Mateen to attack the club during LGBT pride month.

“I cannot tell you with certainty that it is, but it has all the appearances because of the connection with someone who had been to Syria,” Sen. Nelson told Trento. “At the same time for him to have planned it… [on] such a vulnerable target of a lot of people, 300 people in a closed environment… that is a recipe for someone that wants to do harm,” he added. “Unfortunately, there are a lot of grieving people here.”

  1. This Nelson character looks like he is at least 100 years old. He clearly has entered the Joe Biden zone. He needs to head for the dog track. Dinner will be served after the matinee.

  2. Of course he is correct; if the shooter was indeed a loner operating alone, we will never know his motivation. He might have even lied about it. Only if he was part of a conspiracy will we know and at the moment there is no evidence for that.

What *is* known is that he was on a terrorist watch list and that Sen. Nelson voted to make it illegal to sell guns to people on those lists — and that the Republicans blocked that move. The Republicans scream about doing something about Islamic terrorism but they won’t actually do anything about it. Another example is that President Obama asked for an Authorization for Use of Military Force against Islamic State 16 months ago but the Republicans in Congress have refused to allow a vote.

Analysis: False. The shooter called a TV station during the shootings and claimed he was doing it for ISIS. Theorizing that he lied about his motivation simply makes no sense.

Analysis: Partially true but misleading, partially false. The killer had been on the watch list, but was removed from it prior to his legally purchasing guns. Had the proposed law been on the books, it wouldn’t have stopped him. (FWIW, IMO it’s shameful that the Republicans block that law at the behest of the amoral NRA, but that’s a separate point.)

Analysis: True, but misleading. Both Republicans and Democrats object to the proposed bill, for different reasons. The Republican’s objection is that it actually weakens the President’s powers that already were given by earlier versions of AUMF. Far from needing it to attack ISIS, President Obama has been striking ISIS before, during and after the debate and proposal of the unapproved AUMF.
