NRA Executive Vice President and CEO Wayne LaPierre appeared on Hannity last night to discuss the escalating state of readiness that Americans must be in to defend against radical Islamic terror. He blamed the nation’s increased vulnerability on politically correct policies pursued by the Obama administration, dismissing the current gun control narrative as a distraction from what needs to be done.

  1. What we’re witnessing is willful blindness by both sides, to wit:

    a) We need to have immigration policies that are sensible yet don’t prevent legitimate refugees from entering the country (yes, this is far, far easier said than done). We can’t let political correctness blind us to who is most likely to perpetrate a terror attack. This means surveillance of groups likely to be terror petri dishes and common sense screening of citizens.

    b) Weapons that can easily be used to murder a large number of people with relative ease need to be restricted to the military, SWAT teams or the like. The original purpose of the Second Amendment is mostly moot nowadays since tyrannical governments aren’t limited to single-shot muskets and cannons. If you want to allow private citizens to arm themselves enough to give the government pause, where do you draw the line? Machine guns? Smart bombs? MOAB bombs? Nukes? Believe me, a few dozen or hundred “militiamen” drilling in Montana somewhere won’t deter the U.S. government.

What do we have instead? The Left blaming the gun lobby and the Right blaming immigration laws. C’mon guys, this isn’t rocket science.

  2. Just remember: The Torah is not against arming and protecting one’s self.

  3. The problem is that there is no need to have military-style weapons available to the general public. None. Yes, the NRA defends the rights of lawful gunowners to pick up assault rifles. Why?

  4. The gun issue is going to be ongoing. The reality is we need some controls on some of the more dangerous weapons. Probably not national priority number one, but there is likely some consideration.

Still, as a person who has supported the NRA before, I will admit that I am more concerned about mental health. We must have more consideration for physician education, nurse education and mental health access and care.

Ultimately, we need right checks before gun purchases and we must not let anyone on the terror list get access to guns in this nation.

This can be done. The impediment is terror itself.

Scary, but we are going to have to consider all considerations when it comes to real public safety against the terror we face today.

The mental health courts can deal with many.

    Shalom.

    Lock your guns.
