Weeklong Pilot Vaccination Program Begins In NYC

vaccinationsThe New York City Health Department is kicking off a weeklong vaccination program in several city schools this morning. It’s a pilot program aimed at finding efficient ways to immunize large number of children, as officials brace for both the seasonal and swine flu. Six schools are taking part in the pilot program from the health department.The six schools are in the Bronx, Staten Island, Queens, Manhattan, and two in Brooklyn.

Trained nurses will administer the seasonal flu vaccine to approximately 700 students in the six schools. The plan paves the way for the same thing to be done with the new H1N1 vaccine to guard against swine flu.

Officials say their overall school flu vaccination plan has several goals, including to track the flu, obtain strategies to prevent spreading, develop school policies, manage flu in the community and promote vaccination.
