Weiner: ‘I’m Convinced I’m Gonna Be Next Mayor’

New York City mayoral hopeful Anthony Weiner appeared in a live interview with TODAY’s Savannah Guthrie today, just a day before New Yorkers head to the polls to cast their vote in the primaries.

A taped pre-interview between Weiner and Guthrie appeared Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” and Weiner admitted to Guthrie that his campaign was a gamble.

“From the moment go, I was waging this campaign on a bet,” he said. “And the bet was basically that I know that people have embarrassing things they would hear about me and did know about me and my background.”

Weiner told Guthrie he knew “100 percent” his past would be a distraction in his campaign, and overshadow his message and ideas. Now in fourth place, he has slipped from the frontrunner position he once held at the start of his campaign.

He has also hit some trouble on the trail. Last week, he was caught on camera in a verbal altercation with a voter in a Brooklyn bakery. The voter attacked him over his behavior online, and mentioned Huma Abedin, Weiner’s wife.

Abedin has come out publicly in support of her husband.

“Does that not show a capacity to look someone in the eye and lie? Not just your wife, but a reporter, but the public?” Guthrie asked Weiner.

Weiner said that at the time of the interview, he was “working through things,” and admitted that his wife has paid an unfair price for her support.

“I don’t think she did anything wrong,” Weiner said. “Her crime is standing at my side and helping me get through it.”

Guthrie asked whether he would still run, if given the chance to go back in time. “No one gets to go back and redo things,” he said. “I’m convinced that I’m gonna be the next mayor of this city.”
