wienerWhile Rep. Anthony Weiner may no longer have the benefit of Congress’ generous health care plan once he resigns, he will still be able to collect his pension and other benefits that could total more than $1 million during his lifetime.

According to an analysis of his available benefits by the National Taxpayers Union, the New York Democrat’s pension and a savings plan lawmakers have access to similar to a 401(k) could be worth $1.12 million to $1.28 million.

At 46, Weiner will not be eligible for his pension for another decade, at which point he could begin drawing a reduced rate of $32,357 a year, according to NTU. If he waits until age 62 to begin drawing his pension, he will receive his full benefits, or $46,224, according to NTU’s calculations.

Additionally, if Weiner aggressively invested in the Thrift Savings Plan, his balance would be roughly $216,000, the organization said.

Weiner announced Thursday that he would resign from the House in the wake of a scandal that had engulfed the liberal firebrand for weeks and distracted his party.

As of Thursday evening, however, Weiner had yet to actually resign and would technically remain a Member of Congress until next week at the earliest.

  1. He was correct to resign because he was no longer fit to serve, but there is no reason he is not entitled to his pension.

  2. dont get me wrong. he’s a sick man. however, since he broke no laws there is no way to take away his pension. and since it makes sense that congressmen deserve a pension, highlighting this issue makes no sense.

  3. I don’t see what the problem is. Taking away the pension that he earned, in the absence of a criminal conviction, would be theft.

  4. It is very petty and shameful to dislodge a mans place in history even if his presence was offensive at some portion of his tenure in office. This is really not noteworthy as Mr. Weiner did not break the law. His tenure was drawn short due to public outcry and distraction and that is the way that our nations values dictate that our elected officials must conduct their affairs. If anything, this is a positive outcome for there are many who engage in illicit internet activity and thus by Mr. Weiner’s tragedy, I assure you that this activity may indeed decrease as well. But Mr. Weiner served his term up until the past few weeks with a fore stage presence that was constructive and beneficial to the cause of American Liberalism and the Democratic Party. This is not a time or place to demand that a man kow tow to the snide remarks of the unseeming right and unflattered voters as his purpose was served during his tenure and clearly his compensation is Just. So lets not cry illigitimate when a congressman is offered his lawful compensation. To do so would indeed be violating our own values and mores. And Torah calls upon our people to discuss our character and promote lawful ways. Lawless activity such as Mr. Weiner has committed will not be rewarded with merit and clearly his compensation is the grandeur of an office rather than a merit that he deserves due to his presence on the national stage. Thats my take on this article. Thanks.
