What a Surprise: Obama Says Israel Should Sign Non-Proliferation Treaty

obama-nuclearPresident Barack Obama said Tuesday that the US Administration calls upon all nations to sign the Non-Proliferation Treaty, including Israel. Speaking at a press conference end of a nuclear summit in Washington, Obama said that the world was safer today as result of the convention’s achievements.

“We have seized the opportunity,” Obama said at the conclusion of a two-day summit on nuclear security in Washington. “The American people will be safer and the world will be more secure.”

When asked about Israel’s nuclear program, Obama at first refused to address the issue, instead insisting to talk about the US and its commitment to reducing American nuclear weapon stockpiles.

“Initially you were talking about US behavior, and then suddenly we’re talking about Israel. Let me talk about the United States,” the president said. “I do think that as part of the NPT, our obligation, as the largest nuclear power in the world, is to take steps to reducing our nuclear stockpile. And that’s what the START treaty was about, sending a message that we are going to meet our obligations…as far as Israel goes, I’m not going to comment on their program.

However, although initially saying he will not address Israel’s nuclear program, Obama continued, pointing out that the US is calling on all nations to sign the NPT.

“What I’m going to point to is the fact that consistently we have urged all countries to become members of the NPT. So there’s no contradiction there,” he said. “And so whether we’re talking about Israel or any other country, we think that becoming part of the NPT is important. And that, by the way, is not a new position. That’s been a consistent position of the United States government, even prior to my administration.”

  1. This title is misleading. It implies that Obama is going after Israel.

Instead, Obama wants all nations to sign it – whether or not they have nukes (because it is unconfirmed whether or not Israel has a nuke). If, as many suspect, Israel has a nuclear weapon, Israel can continue to hide it. Having everyone sign the NPT is something that will only help Israel.

  2. Very misleading headline, such abrasive, misleading headlines encourage anti semitisim, why cant we remain sane, and criticize our president when criticisim is due, like with his idea of sending a U.S. ambassador to syria, when syria, is in the midst of sending scuds to hizbulah, the largest terrorist network, that will now have the capacity with the scuds to reach 700 kilometers into israel; and hizbulah is a terrorist network, that threatens the stability of israel and lebanon, and they even planned terrorisim against the U.S. In the past. Now with regards to israel, well she also has a representative at the gathering, maybe not the prime minister who didnt want attention to be diverted against israel, but there is a team of israeli officials there nonthless. and in essence israel is also taking steps to secure her nuclear sights, so why is she any different to the U.S.? I am sure the U.S. has many more nuclear sights then israel, and its also hillarious how ironic the U.S. has become, they preach against nukes, when they are the only country that ever used it, and although it was absolutely necessary and it braught the war to an end, but a few hundred thousand people died, and so America does have hypocracy in its agenda. but truth be told a super power has to have some hypocracy in its foreign policy its the only way to control things, and create stability around the world, and so with regards to the U.S. And her nukes, well she will probably use it again in the future, when the showoff with iran begins, but she still has to preach against nukes in order to create some stability around the world.
