sukkah5One is permitted to eat foods which do not require a Hamotzie, Mezonos or Hagafen out of the Sukkah when those foods are not being eaten as part of a Hamotzie/Mezonos meal. (Shulchan Aruch w/Mishnah Berurah 639:2 MB12,13, see Shaar Hatziyun 29)

However, since today it is common to eat meals which do not include any bread or other Mezonos items, many people are machmir (act stringently) and do not eat meals out of the Sukkah, even when those meals do not include Hamotzie or Mezonos foods. (Piskei Tshuvos 639:9, Tshuvos V’Hanhagos 1:371)

Hilchos Sukkah – Review

It is a Mitzvah to build the Sukkah immediately after Yom Kippur, and if one was unable to complete it at night, one should complete it the next morning. (Shulchan Aruch w/Mishnah Brurah 624:5, 625:1, Piskei Tshuvos 625:4)

Even if one hires, or appoints others to build his Sukkah, it is a Hiddur Mitzvah for one to place the Schach on the Sukkah himself. According to the Talmud Yerushalmi (Berachos 9:3) the building of the Sukkah is a Mitzvah that requires a beracha. However, we pasken like the Talmud Bavli (Menachos 42) that no beracha is required and the building of the Sukkah is a Hechsher Mitzvah (preparation for a Mitzvah) [which according to some opinions is also a Mitzvah]. (Piskei Tshuvos 625:3, 641:1)
