White Plains Teen Makes Bar Mitzvah With Historic Serbian Torah

joseph-block-of-white-plainsWhen 13-year-old Joseph Block reads from the Torah at his bar mitzvah this morning, he won’t just become a man in the eyes of the Jewish people – he’ll help write the next chapter in the story of a struggling Jewish community more than 4,500 miles away.

For the traditional Jewish ceremony that marks a boy’s coming of age, the White Plains teenager will read from a Torah that was given to the Jewish community of Belgrade, Serbia, in 1947 by the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, a Manhattan nonprofit that still provides humanitarian aid to Jewish communities around the world. Joseph’s father Herbert Block is an associate vice president at the JDC.
