lakewood-vaad-endorsement-smallThe city of Lakewood will be a tense one today with a crucial Republican primary election taking place for a seat on the Township Committee. However, some are disappointed because they aren’t registered to vote and thus feel that they have no voice in their government. However, many people may be able to vote in today’s Republican primary and just aren’t aware of it. So here are a few myths dispelled by some voting registration facts.

The biggest myth in New Jersey is that if you aren’t a registered Republican, then you can’t vote in the Republican primary. This is true in some states, but New Jersey isn’t one of them. New Jersey law allows a registered voter to switch parties at the voting ballot on the day of the primary election.

For example, if you are a registered Democrat or Independent, you can go to your voting center and ask to switch to the Republican party right there and then. After registering as a Republican, you can then vote in the Republican primary.

The second biggest misunderstanding is regarding people who don’t know what party they are registered under. They think that they aren’t registered voters. If you have ever voted in a general election such as the presidential election, then you are a registered voter. Just go to your voting center today and ask to vote in the Republican primary. If you happen to not be a registered Republican, you can switch right there and then in order to vote.

    Political Party Resources

A registered voter currently affiliated with a political party who wishes to change their party affiliation must file a Political Party Affiliation Declaration Form 50 days before a Primary Election.

A registered voter currently not affiliated with a political party may declare their party affiliation up to and including Primary Election day.

You can print and complete the Political Party Affiliation Declaration Form (see links below) and mail or deliver to the Commissioner of Registration in your county or you can also file it with your municipal clerk. These cards are also available at your local Commissioner of Registration Office.

The Commissioner of Registration cannot accept faxed copies or an electronic transmission of Party Affiliation Declaration Forms, since an original signature is required.
