rav-ovadiah-yosefYerushalayim – After helping to establish the mourning tent that has hosted thousands of people at the home of Rav Ovadiah Yosef zt”l on Rechov Hakablan in Har Nof, Yerushalayim, the municipality promises to continue its efforts to pay tribute to Chacham Ovadiah.

Yerushalayim Mayor Nir Barkat wrote on his Facebook page: “In the coming months, the city will commemorate properly the great work of Maran in Yerushalayim, where he worked and lived.”

This remark by the mayor has sparked rumors about a possible change of the name of Rechov Hakablan to Rechov Harav Ovadiah Yosef or something similar.

Senior officials in the Yerushalayim Municipality confirmed that they will indeed be doing everything possible to perpetuate the memory of Chacham Ovadiah, but that changing a street name “cannot be legally done until after two years have elapsed since the person has passed away. Even then, the Names Committee of the municipality must approve it.”

However, according to the same officials, “there is special expedited procedure when it comes to special personalities; it is possible to shorten the procedure and there is precedent to do so. Therefore, the mayor will make every effort to commemorate appropriately the work of Chacham Ovadiah. ”
