Windows Death Watch: Microsoft Killing Off XP

8

microsoftThe end is coming.

That’s the message from Microsoft as it reminded consumers that its support for Windows XP SP3 and Office 2003 will end on April 8, 2014.

According to Microsoft marketing director Stella Chernyak that means the software giant will nix security updates, non-security hot-fixes and technical support after that date. So let the countdown begin. You now have less than two years to get your affairs in order and hightail it to more current software.

Chernyak commented in a blog post that “Windows XP and Office 2003 were great software releases in their time, but the technology environment has shifted. Technology continues to evolve and so do people’s needs and expectations.” \

This should come as no surprise, since the announcement is consistent with Microsoft’s 2002 support lifestyle policy that offers a minimum of 10 years of support (at least five years of mainstream support and five additional years of extended support).

But there’s a large amount of users still using XP up to SP3, and not everyone will be happy about having to upgrade. And enterprise deployment can take anywhere between 18 to 32 months from business case through full deployment, so those who want to stick with Windows and Office should begin planning, well, now.

The company recommends switching to Windows 7 and Office 2010 rather than waiting for Windows 8. Microsoft wants to facilitate that migration and is thus offering a free download of Windows 7 and Office 2010.

It has to be better then windows 7.
    hmmmmf.
    Windows people cant fool me.
They think I will just do what they want anytime? No Way.
I am smarter then they think.
When windows 10 comes out in 5 years it will be the best.
EVERYONE SHOULD WAIT FOR THE ’10’ VERSION.
    Show them whose boss.

We are not zombies to just upgrade because they threaten not to help us in times of need.
I can always go back to windows 1 version.
    That will teach ’em!

  2. If this alleged offer of “a free download of Windows 7 and Office 2010” is indeed correct then it ids a cynical kick in the teeth for the hundreds of thousands of people and companies that have forked out good money to buy those products.

  3. It is just a tool kit. You still need to pay for the licenses. If you want to install version 1. I have news for you there was never version 1.

  5. Rabosai, I googled “free download of Windows 7 and Office 2010” and it appears we can download both of them for free. Any idea as to what’s the catch?

  6. It appears to me that the free downloads of Windows 7 and Office 2010 available on line are not legitimate, except for those from Microsoft site which has 30,60, or 90-day expiration dates.

  7. it’s a free DOWNLOAD… not a free LICENSE.
After downloading you have a 30 or 60 day trial period. After that you gotta pay $$$.

  8. Undeniably consider that which you said. Your favorite reason appeared to be at the web the simplest thing to have in mind of. I say to you, I definitely get annoyed at the same time as people consider issues that they plainly do not understand about. You controlled to hit the nail upon the highest and outlined out the entire thing with no need side-effects , other people can take a signal. Will likely be again to get more. Thank you
