Woman Hit by NYC Bus Gets $27.5M for Lost Leg


nyc-busA woman whose left leg was severed after she was hit by a New York City Transit bus has been awarded $27.5 million by Manhattan jury. The jury awarded the money to 45-year-old Gloria Aguilar, who was hit by the 40,000 pound bus as she crossed West 50th Street at 10th Street around 7 p.m. on Nov. 4, 2005. Bellevue Hospital doctors amputated the leg above the knee, said her lawyer Ben Rubinowitz.Rubinowitz said transit lawyers argued that the janitorial worker was outside the crosswalk and had walked into the side of the bus.

Rubinowitz said the $27.5 million award was the largest ever for a lost leg.
