finance-minister-yair-lapidWith a half a million people gathering to daven to the Ribono Shel Olam for Heavenly mercy, Finance Minister and Yesh Atid chairman Yair Lapid wasted no time in stating that the mass gathering of so many thousands of chareidim actually proves the necessity of the law.

“This picture proves why equality in the burden of military service is so important, because anyone looking at this mass of people understands that the State of Israel can’t carry these people on its back without them taking part in military and civilian service and taking part in the labor force and the Israeli economy,” Lapid said in an interview with Channel 10.

“A state with self-respect understands that there is a connection between rights and obligations.

There can’t be one sector that is freed from the obligations. I have nothing against them, but I want them to fulfill the same obligations as my son has. They need to have a part in being Israeli, and this is not an outrageous demand. They need to know that this is not an attack on the Torah world or Torah study.”

  1. On pen and paper Yair has a point. But to hide behind his logic and then go on to say that he has nothing against the Torah world or Torah study, is plain Hippocratic, especially in face of what he has said on many accounts.

  2. “They need to know that this is not an attack on the Torah world or Torah study.”

Hey Dovy, how does it feel like, going against your Rebbeim? Are you so smug that you feel you know better than Daas Torah? Haven’t you learnt from Chazal what happens when a baal gaava starts up with Gedoley Torah? Were you paying attention when your Rebbi taught you those Gemorah’s? If you stick to your buddy Lapid, you will end up with the same fate as Haman Harasha! Is that what you really want?

  3. Lapid thinks he’s putting one over by his inane statement. These chareidim are not living on the backs of the people (gov). They have businesses in all their neighborhoods, they have their own service people (elect., plumbers, etc.). The minority might be on the take from government, but get such a minimal stipend that a family cannot really live on what they receive and thus are very poor. Others get from the charities which, B’H, there are many from the States and in Israel. According to him and his ilk, it is better to give millions/billions to the ones who murder the Jews. They support in every way those living now in Gaza and the PLO, all being carried by the Jewish people (through taxes) in Israel. When there is hate such as this, all logic and common sense go out the window. May his party go under like his father’s party did.

  4. I bet his son got a desk job in the military. Who is he to talk. Can anyone find out where the son of gov’t officials are serving in the army? I hope they aren’t all studying abroad running around with shiksas.

  5. This is why Yair Lapid and his party Yesh Atid should not be part of the Knesset, they don’t understand the meaning of what the Torah means to the military.
He and Yesh Atid needs to know this Atzeres Tefillah is not attack on them or the work of the military.

  6. 1 – Of course, Lapid is a liar, like all who hate Hashem are lying: his aim is directly against Torah. Remember what his own father said against Judaism.
2- The ‘State of Israel” is not “carrying ” anybody on its back. Hashem, in His great kindness, is allowing honest Jews to live on our own land, while the apikorsim get a “free ride” until Gehinnom.
2 – His demand that Jews should be Israelim IS an outrageous demand, as he knows. Jews are not looking to be Israelim, but Israelim should be looking to be Jews.
2 – His son is serving (whom) in the IDF? His son’s first and most urgent obligation is to acknowledge Hashem! What does his son do in the IDF?
4 – Now Lapid calls it “equality in the burden of military service”. Not “equality in serving the Jewish people by serving G-d”.
Like the liars in the left-wing American government, he changes the terms of discussion as soon as reality begins to break through the screen of secular “news”papers, TV and radio “news” and MK lies.
5 – The Torah specifically describes who should determine which Jews must go to war in defense of Torah jews. It is specific about exemptions. It does not say a politician should make that determination.
6 – Since Lapid obviously does not want to live in a Jewish state, he can do yerida! (I suggest North Korea.)

  7. Fair enough, Yair. Take out the prerequisite of army service from work and you will see how much we contribute to economy like we do in America. What’s that ? No way you say ? Of course not ! Because you want to destroy our learning through the melting pot of the army. This has nothing to do with work and everything to do with DESTROYING TORAH like Reb Chaim Solovethick said in beginning of century. Zionism is only a way to uproot torah and has nothing to do with settling the land as we saw the early zionists wanted to settle Uganda instead of ??? ?????. Lapid, you will lose like your father lost. You will disappear like Haman and we will go on forever…..

  8. Perhaps the Rabbonim should agree to the national service by the Chareidim on condition that the secular yiddin have to do their “religious” service. Just a month at a program like Arachim, or Ohr Somayach for Israelis. I remember hearing that in the 70s or 80s, the military sent its top officers to Ohr Somayach, but had to stop because so many wanted to continue learning Torah once they tasted just a drop. The goal would be to let them see that Torah isn’t, as they have been taught, only for children and lost souls. Its for all thinking people.

  9. oh yeah lapid.your service in the army as a journalist was so important to the future of the Jewish people!what an arrogant, meshuganah!Haredim are paying 18% taxes on everything we buy just like everyone else. Its you who are giving rich companies like Teva a free ride of BILLIONS of shekels of taxes, and giving the PA a free ride on electricity, etc.so they’ll have plenty of money to pay terrorists to kill Jews

  11. Torah is not for sale. Israel has its obligation to keep Torah services and Torah examples in our future. But our news today is that we must indeed sell the future of our own promise. This is where we need to differ from everyone who keeps a prayer for a heart of suffering against the reasoning of better atonement. Israel must be protected by all of our Jewish souls who keep the world safe for democracy as we live in the middle east. It is not a changing option. Living in Israel has many office demands for the Israelite. And if you are ready for the future, lets keep pressing forward. Baruch Hashem.

  12. The secularists got it all wrong. It’s the chareidim who are carrying the State on their backs. The IDF did not request more manpower. The economy was doing well. It’s only the polititians who are making trouble due to their agenda. Israel (the people) are G-d’s chosen people with a history of faith in G-d and G-d’s providence. The secular polititians are trying to erase that from memory, the way Palestinians revise history. That’s why they don’t understand that it’s the chareidim who are carrying them on their backs.

  13. Can this guy please decide if we are a small minority manipulating the govn’t or a large population that needs to be reckoned with!

  14. This is the most striking anti-Semitic comment I have ever come across. Subtle, sophisticated, and stinking with Jew-hatred. What about non-Jewish Israelis? Has he denounced them so universally? Would he? He makes old Tommy (ysv”z) look like a saint.

  15. Unfortunately Lapid u don’t understand that the real obligation of a Jew is to learn Thora and do mitzvot so in truth the charedim are carrying most of the burden. It’s unfortunate that after the holocaust your father missed the point of understanding and teaching u that the jews will never own anything that is not jewish. What I mean by that is that your precious israeli state is first and foremost a jewish state and trying to separate the two is not possible. With that said u and the ones like you should take a part at being jewish and at the very least let us protect am yisrael (where the word israel actually comes from, the son of yaakov aka yisrael) by learning Thora and doing mitzvot.
It’s not only an attack on the Thora world it’s attack against our people yourself included because THIS is THE only real protection we have and have always had.

  16. This is false. This has nothing to do with the needs of the IDF, which has surplus manpower and does not want masses of charedi soldiers, and everything to do with the secular attempt to “enlighten” the charedim. In other words, this is a spiritual war.
