yerushalayimThe struggle for the seats of the Yerushalayim chief rabbinate took a turn yesterday, when the Yerushalayim municipality announced in a letter to the Supreme Court that traditional and secular Jews should also have a say in the matter. According to the municipality, two-thirds of the city’s Jewish population are “Zionists,” or non-ultra-Orthodox Jews, and this fact has to be considered when choosing municipal rabbis.

“The synagogue delegates in the electing assembly must represent all of the public interested in maintaining Jewish religious services in Yerushalayim, including tradition-observing seculars, religious Zionists and ultra-Orthodox,” the municipality said.

The letter was sent as part of an ongoing appeal by the Ne’emanei Torah Va’avodah Movement to the Supreme Court, which claims the Ministry of Religious Services gave unfair preference to chareidi delegates when it appointed the 24-member assembly.

Although the appeal targets both Religious Services Minister Yaakov Margi (Shas) and Yerushalayim Mayor Nir Barkat, the mayor supports the appeal and is in opposition to Margi.

For this reason, even though Margi decided to cancel the procedure altogether, the Yerushalayim municipality asked the Supreme Court to go on deliberating the appeal.

  1. What does it matter, as long as the Rav is a talmid chachom and yirei shamayim?

Really the concern here is for future jobs of dayanim, neighborhood rabbanim, kashrut & eruv supervisors etc. This is a very $$$$$$$$$ issue, of who will get future positions?

  2. A koifer can’t be a rabbi. Secular people have marginalized themselves, now don’t come crying you want representation in the rabbinate. The rabbinate represents Jews. If you want to be a goy, you should go live in chul.

  3. Nobody holds by the Rabbinate anyway, and this is another of many excellent examples why not.

The real agenda is making gerusei sheker out of more goyim and allowing treyf restaurants to open on Shabbos and stores to sell chametz gamur on Pesach.

Why isn’t Moshiach here? Because of the Israeli government and frei people. And they know what happens when He comes, speedily in our days.
