Heads of many of Yerushalayim’s churches decided to boycott a new year event hosted by Mayor Nir Barkat in revenge for a decision to impose property taxes of over $183 million on 887 Yerushalayim churches.

“We maintain a good, respectful relationship with the churches of the city,” the municipality said in response. “Nonetheless, we cannot accept a situation in which hotels, banquet halls and businesses are exempt from municipal tax just because they are under church ownership.”

The city noted that the tax will not include houses of prayer that are exempt by law.
