school-closedTwo days after Yeshiva Bais Hatorah in Lakewood, NJ, was forced to close due to a financial shortfall, the close to 400 students of the yeshiva largely remain stranded and without a school. Matzav.com has learned that the school administration, led by its executive director, Rabbi Binyomin Heinemann, is working tirelessly to raise the funds necessary to reopen the school as soon as possible. This possibility is partially dependent on how many students find other schools in the interim, but, at this point, local schools in Lakewood have limited, if any, ability to accept new students.

Bais HaTorah is short approximately $500,000 and thus received a p’sak this past Sunday – the day it was supposed to open for the new school year – that it may not open until the money is raised to cover the 14-week delay in salary payments.

Parents of the school today gathered at the home of Rav Matisyahu Salomon, mashgiach of Beth Medrash Govoha who is a grandparent of the school and has guided the school since its founding, to try to find a solution for the hundreds of students who are as of yet without a school.

The boys’ elementary school, now entering its 12th year, occupies a campus on Swarthmore Avenue in Lakewood’s Industrial Park. If the school administration is unable to raise the necessary monies shortly, the school building will be sold to pay for the mortgage and the salaries of the 17 rabbeim and other employees.

  1. $500,000/400 kids = $1,250 per kid to raise. If each kid collects 100 singles per day, they can re-open in less than 2 weeks.

Now isn’t that an ingenius solution? 🙂

  2. GREAT ! THE SCHOOL IS SHORT 500000 DOLLARS AND
ARE WORKING TO RAISE THIS AMOUNT . AND WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? CLOSE AGAIN CHANUKA?

WHEN THE MASHGIACH SAID FOR THE SCHOOLS LAST YEAR TO TAKE IN ALL THE GIRLS DID ALL SCHOOLS LISTEN TO HIM? THIS IS A MAJOR WAKE UP CALL

    FOR A SCHOOL TO SURVIVE
PARENTS MUST BE THE FIRST TO HELP FINANCIALLY
EITHER BY THEMSELVES OR BY MAJOR FUND RAISING.

LETS STOP JUDGING EVERYONE AND INSTEAD WORK TOGETHER RESPECTFULLY
AND YOU WILL SUCCEED. THE BUEDEN SHOULD NOT FALL ONLY ON RABBI HEINEMAN OR HARAV SOLOMON

  3. there are HUNDREDS of schools starting this year with a half million in debt
I can personally list you 20 schools that I know who are more then 3 months behind and thats only the limited few I know
if they do raise the half a million that they need what is in place to ensure that next summer they are not going to be in the same Matzav?

Each summer a few schools create this emergency bailout campaign threatening to leave kids on the street etc and low and behold they are saved. That is until one school will play the game and wont get bailed out then and only then will we really see the problem.

Bottom line is that in todays era the schools and parents do not work together. Parents think the schools are demading too much, do not need the money, are privately owned family business etc and schools think parents have money for everything but tuition. Neither trust or likes the other and no body wants to work together. It is a sad sad reality.

1 last thing – what happened to fundraising? For every 100 schools you know how many have a person who is only working on fund-raising? The answer is maybe 1 out of 100. The other 99 rely on a few dollars from the government a half hearted attempt at a raffle or auction and just pressure the parents morte and more. Nobody wants to fund-raise all they want is the parents to feel the burden and come up with the money.

  4. To #5
The parents are in not really capable of pitching it because most of them live at or below the poverty level. This whole affair during the month of Elul demonstrated the need to reexamine, in a very serious way, the economic structure of Torah society.

  5. I agree with #7. Most parents at Bais HaTorah are kollel couples, struggling to stay afloat financially while staying in Kollel. However, the solution is not as easy as just going out and earning a living.

  6. Kol hakavod to Reb Benny Heinemann, a truly special person whose work is done behind the scenes and who never looks for credit. He is a true menthc, a humble Yid and a source of great pride to his extended choshuve family and all of Klal Yisroel.

  7. Most of us dont support our childrens Yeshivos with the Maaser we need to give even from Kollel checks. I am a former staff member of other Yeshivos who owe me over 200k together. Curently without a job and can’t pay tuition or mortgage.
The only solutions to receive more money would be to have more fundraisers, higher tuitions, grant writers and the best would be for all jewish parents to register their kids in Public school 1 day before they open. All Frum parents must arrange the time and place and the Rabbonim must make a Machoah that if the parents dont bring a signed registration to the yeshiva then they will have to reconsider their acceptance back into Yeshivah. Public schools receive 12k-16k for an average student without any added services. Even if Yeshivos would receive 50% because they only use half a day for Limudei Chol this alone would be a Brocho.
Again this must be done in Massive numbers with the community askonim notifying the autorities the day or 2 before it happens and everyone must line up orderly etc…. in order for it to have any affect!
I have been saying this in monsey for a few years…………
My childrens Yeshivah decided to shut down 1 month ago or so. Most other local Yeshivos did not want to accept new students and they only had about 100 kids wwith small classes.
I hope someone comes up with a major solution! Hatzlocho Raboh!

  8. Kohl”s Depaertment Store is giving 500k to 20 schools who have people vote for the school. The 20 schools with the highest numbers win a half million dollars each.
Last month 17 orthodox mosdos won 20k from Target Corporation because they had high votes…… Imagine if everybody in lakewood voted for this Yeshivah the problem would be solved!

  9. My grandson’s yeshiva in the new york area has a larger defeciet and teachers have not been paid since May……any suggestions?

  10. To # 5;
Please make sure that your caps lock is turned off.If you truly think that every single word of yours is worthy of the emphasis that the use of caps suggest, may I suggest that others may more readily agree with you were you to adapt a less shrill tone.

  11. i just offered this challange on a another website and would like to suggest it to readers of matzav.com as well. i bli neder will give $1200 to yeshiva bais hatora if 24 other grandparents do the same. why not show your eineklach how important their chinuch is to you. if you are interested in joining this endeavour or if you are a member of the hanhala of the yeshivaand would like to discuss this idea please contact me through this website.

  12. STOP all the Kosher cruises and Pesach programs including Succoss ,then thousands of dollars would be available. The Rabonim should talk about this asap.

  13. It is a fact that almost all the time someone types in CAPS (can you say #5?) not only is he arrogant but has basically nothing logical to say. For example he notes to stop judging everyone and yet that is precisely what the he himself is doing. Must be from Chicago!

  14. I am a highly experienced fund raiser.
each time I enter into negotiations with a Yeshiva, it falters because they want to pay commission only.
I say to them pay me a salary for three months, then we can make an agreement based on a split between a small retainer and a commission.
Any professional needs a number of months to get the ball rolling.

  15. #21 I would love to talk to you about a job and am willing to pay a salary for a few months to get you going before we deal with commissions. If you are good then you are worth it. If not then it is a short term risk. If you are interested in a job as a fund-raiser for a school lets get together. Perhaps the moderator at this site can be the Shadchan.

And by the way – to all those who are dreaming when they say lets all put our kids into public school. You are in lala land. The Government will not change the state or federal laws just because there is a bottleneck in some community schools. Rabbi Moshe Sherer ZT”L used to always say that this is a threat the Board of ed and the state will gladly accept with open arms. yes there may be a logistical problem, there may be a school bus issue or a food issue but the State of NJ will LOVE having 100,000 kids in their system. They get $18,000 per child, it will create hundreds of jobs for teachers, cooks, drivers, janitors etc. It will increase spending for books, supplies and so much more. For the state to get an influx of so many kids in the system is like winning the lottery. It will be a short term crisis for a great financial reward. Don’t be a fool to think that because so many Yiddishe Kinder go to public school that the state laws on separation between church and state will change. Don’t think that you will be able to get the subjects or Tzniyus or anything else you would want out of them. it’s Narish to even suggest.

Governer Christie will personally come to Lakewood and thank each of us for bringing millions of dollars and thousands of jobs to his State if we put our kids in the public schools. Remember we don’t control the State. The State controls us. There are laws for all and we need to follow them. They will not change just because a throng of kids joined the system.

  16. #19-chassidim all have one mossad to give to. Each one gives to their own – all the elementary, high school, shuls etc are all part of one. While a non chassid has the schools they went to, their children’s elementary – girls and boys and high school – girls and boy and mesivta etc. etc. It is a big difference.

  17. if there is a yeshiva or yeshivos which would like to employ a top flight fundraiser as per my previous comment #22 please leave your name a phone number here.
