accident-israel-zakaA 16-year-old yeshiva bochur from Beit Shemesh was killed this  afternoon after being hit by a car at the entrance to Moshav Safsufa in the Upper Galilee near Mount Meron. His friend who was with him was critically injured.

The accident occurred as the two made their way on foot to the mikvah  in Safsufa. The driver who hit the two is a 26-year-old resident of the city of Tarshiha. He was detained by police for questioning.

A team of Magen David Adom paramedics took the injured teen to the Rambam Hospital in Haifa.

ZAKA volunteer Shai Elmakias told Arutz Sheva’s Hebrew website before the start of Shabbos: “The accident happened at the entrance to Moshav Sufsufa in the Galilee. Two yeshiva students who were walking on the road were hit by a passing private vehicle.

“When I reached the scene the casualties were lying in the ditch near the road,” Elmakias said. “I immediately began performing CPR on them, but unfortunately, one 16-year-old boy was pronounced dead and his friend, who was in critical condition, was taken by helicopter to Rambam Hospital in Haifa.”

Elmakias said that the accident was “a difficult sight to see. The yeshiva students are just starting their vacation these days and already such a tragedy has taken place.”

Earlier on Friday, a 46-year-old was moderately injured after falling from a height of three meters near the tomb of Rabbi Isaac Luria (also known as the Holy Ari) in Tzfat. He was taken to the Ziv Hospital in Tzfas suffering from injuries in his head and limbs.

Six people were killed in road accidents through Israel this past week; ten were seriously injured. A total of 235 people have been killed on Israel’s roads since the beginning of 2011.
