bais-yisroel-dinner[Photos below.] Yeshiva Gedolah Bais Yisroel held its 27th Annual Legacy Dinner at the Sephardic Lebanese Congregation in Flatbush on Sunday, 4 Iyar/April 18. Hundreds of former talmidim of the yeshiva founded by Rav Avigdor Miller zt”l, along with current parents and enthusiastic community supporters of the yeshiva, came to testify to their awareness of the essential role that supporting Torah contributes to the future well-being of Klal Yisroel.

Rav Dovid Goldwasser, noted rov and renowned Torah lecturer and author, graced the event as master of ceremony. He spoke of how the yeshiva, with a mesivta in Flatbush and a bais medrash and kollel in Bayswater, continues, under the guidance of the rosh yeshiva, Rav Shmuel Miller, to carry out the founder’s vision of developing a new generation of talmidei chachomim who will illuminate the truth and life-saving connection of Torah to Jewish communities around the world.

This year’s dinner was dedicated to three prominent individuals whose contributions have helped the yeshiva in particular and Klal Yisroel in general. Mr. and Mrs. Leo Mizrahi, prominent members of the Flatbush Sephardic community, were the distinguished Guests of Honor.

In accepting the award, Mr. Mizrahi recalled the recent kiddush Hashem when, on the last day of the Yom Tov of Pesach, hundreds of Jews in Brooklyn, from all religious backgrounds, united as one to try and find an eight year-old boy who was missing from his family. What united these diverse Jews in their mission of mercy? Mr. Mizrahi said that the answer came to him from the Yom Tov tefillah which begins, “Atah vechartanuYou were chosen from all the nations.” The power comes from uniting in the study of Torah and supporting those engaged in teaching Torah to our next generation.

Rabbi Shalom Morrow, president of Beis Medrash of Flatbush, was honored with the Rabbi Avigdor Miller Memorial Award in recognition of his many years of support to Yeshiva Gedolah Bais Yisroel and for his own dedication to numerous community endeavors whose focus is chessed and Torah. Rabbi Morrow has had a close relationship with the Miller family for almost 60 years and, in fact, Rav Miller zt”l was the shadchan between Rabbi Morrow and his wife Ethel (nee Dworetsky) a”h.

Rabbi Shaul Attias was presented with the Rabbi Avner Abensour Alumni Award. He accepted the award on behalf of all his fellow chaveirim who had the zechus to benefit from Yeshiva Gedolah Bais Yisroel. He spoke of how the rosh yeshiva, Rav Shmuel Miller, treated him and all the talmidim in the bais medrash with the exceptional love and concern that a father has for his own children. This attitude, Rabbi Attias said, was also reflected in the dedication of the other rabbeim and to this day continues to inspire him and his wife in how they live and raise their own children.

A highlight of the evening was a special address from the rosh yeshiva. Rav Shmuel Miller spoke of the unique opportunity that the days between Pesach and Shavuos offer to every Jew to dedicate oneself to increased learning of Torah and to supporting those Torah institutions that are at the forefront of teaching our children and young men to excel in learning Torah.

The rosh yeshiva said that this mission of teaching Torah to the next generation can only be achieved if all of Klal Yisroel joins together. It is the strong support of Torah that will ensure the growth and strength of our nation as the am haTorah.

A video was shown of Rav Avigdor Miller addressing an earlier dinner of Yeshiva Gedolah Bais Yisroel. The former menahel ruchni of the yeshiva spoke of how every Jew must believe that since the giving of the Torah at Har Sinai, the major concern of Hakadosh Boruch Hu is only the wellbeing and actions of Klal Yisroel. Every Jew – boy or girl, man or woman – outweighs on Hakadosh Boruch Hu‘s scale the rest of the universe with its millions of stars, planets and other creations.

This realization that Hashem loves us, Rav Miller reiterated, must inspire us to be cognizant of our need to love Hashem. Only by studying Torah and supporting other institutions that teach Torah to our children can we develop the proper appreciation of Hashem’s strong and eternal love for us and our obligation to love and serve Him with all our abilities.

  1. This Heiligi Mukoim Toirah, led by Rabbi Shmuel Miller Shlita, the son of Haguoin Hatsadik Harav Avigdor Miller Zatsal. Is trully a place of Torah, and Reb Shmuel Miller is a great tsadik, who has the perfect blend, of a lamdan and a bal musser, and his acts of chesed, are just unbelievable. I for one am for ever gratefull for all the help hes given me, as a student of the yeshiva. And then the financial support, he gave me when I got married, a true tsadik.
