rav-mordechai-eliyahu[Ad below.] Supporters of former Sephardi chief rabbi Rav Mordechai Eliyahu, who has been hospitalized in a serious condition for more than a month, has urged the chareidi public to “donate” a year of their lives to spur the rabbi’s recovery. The man made the call in a message he published in the Besheva weekly publication a few days ago.He told Haaretz on today that since the publication of the advertisement, hundreds of chassidim have told him of their intentions to sacrifice, at least symbolically, different periods of time from their lives in order to extend the lifespan of Rav Eliyahu.

“This is my own private initiative,” said the man, who requested to remain anonymous. “In my eyes, it’s like donating a kidney or an organ to a sickly patient. This isn’t a big sacrifice for the donators. I’ve seen how upset people have been since the rov was hospitalized, and this initiative cheers them up.”

All are asked to continue davening for Rav Mordechai Temach ben Mazal.

  1. I want to see any of those people after 120 years and they are dying to be willing to donate even 5 minutes of their life. If someone is going to donate a year of their life so easily, then they really don’t value what life is and their year of life is not worth very much!!!

  2. It is surprising; I’ve heard of this kind of thing before and the stories I’ve heard had people donating hours, etc., a month max. I think also that I matter too much to my family to make an extravagant gesture though.

You want to know my take on this? The Sephardim have a passion and kavod harav that is inspiring.

  3. Yes to number 2! They really do bli ayin hara! Yet all Jews do but they have something special i have seen such kavod it is engrained with them!

  4. This reminds me of when Rav Aryeh Levin’s zt”l daughter was terminally ill, and he visited the underground prisoners in the Russian compound prison every shabbos. When the prisoners heard about his daughter’s illness, they donated a week, month, few months for her refuah shelayma. BH she did merit a refuah shelayma…..so this is not a new phenomenom to donate some of your life to others.

  5. Emett vi yasiv vinachon: Sephardim have great kovod for their rabbinim,”naseh vnishma,” and great passion for doing chessed; but even Adom Harishon at the end of his life ,was upset he gave away 70 years of his life to Dovid hamelach;and that was after he lived 930 years! In our days people live to 70-80 years old, 365 days is a long time to give away.

  6. The Chofetz Chaim TZ”l was once asked to donate a few moments of his time for one the gedolim his answer was if you knew how precious life was you wouldn’t ask at all? If I recall correctly one minute was all he was willing to give.

  7. I had a Rebbi once who was a talmid of Rav Aharon Kotler, z”l. He related that prior to Rav Aharon’s petirah, the talmidim were asked to donate part of their life to the Rosh Yeshiva. This rebbe of mine related, to the entire 7th grade class, whilst tears were coursing down his face, how he gave a year of his life for Rav Aharon. (This took place in 1989 or 1990 – quite a while after Rav Aharon’s petirah)

  8. Your life is a gift from God – He gave you X amount of years on this Earth. Who says you can “donate” it? Quite simply – your life does not belong to you.

The defense of “Adam did it, so it must be acceptable” is flawed. We cannot begin to comprehend his though processes and certainly cannot draw halacha from his actions.

Hashem has allotted Rav Eliyahu exactly the appropriate amount of time on this Earth. To suggest that he deserves more time is bordering on heretical because it accuses God of mistakingly giving him too little time.

  9. Rav Naftali Tropp zt”l, Rosh Yeshiva of the famed Radin Yeshiva, was gravely ill. In the Yeshiva, each of the bachurim (students) decided to commit themselves to a certain number of hours of uninterrupted Torah study, in whose merit he should receive, G-d willing, a complete recovery (refuah sheleimah). A delegation of students approached the holy Chafetz Chaim zt”l, whose love for R’ Naftali was legendary, to ask him to participate in their ‘drive’ by donating some of his uninterrupted Torah study.

“Yes,” he responded enthusiastically, “I will donate one minute of uninterrupted Torah study in his merit!” The delegation was caught off- guard. Students had dedicated many hours of Torah study to this worthy cause, and they had sincerely hoped the great sage would have been a little more generous in his contribution.

One of the students mustered the courage to interject. “We had hoped the Rebbe would given a little more than one minute.”

“My dear bachurim,” replied the Chafetz Chaim, “you interpret my donation of one minute as lacking recognition of the worthiness of your cause. I assure you this is not the case. My love and admiration of the Rosh Yeshiva is limitless. Perhaps you don’t appreciate the inestimable value of just one minute of uninterrupted Torah study; if you would have, you would never have deemed my contribution as lacking.”
