Yizkor? We’ve Got an App for That

Memorial candles – the virtual version. Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon on today launched the ‘Yizkor’ Facebook app ahead of Israel’s Memorial Day and was the first to light a virtual candle in memory of the fallen.

The page is accessible through the Defense Ministry’s Facebook page. The ministry explained that the app was also intended to increase identification with the fallen and the national Memorial Day.

The app allows viewers to light a personal candle in memory of their loved ones or light a candle in memory of all the fallen. Moreover, it offers users a chance to write a personal dedication and share personal stories and memories.

Ya’alon who was visiting the Defense Ministry’s families and commemoration section wrote in a personal dedication: “On Memorial Day, each and every one of our personal memories come together with our collective memory as a society and State. On this day we will remember those who have fallen for State and nation and try and be worthy of their sacrifice.”

During the visit, Ya’alon noted: “I’m always asked what was the most difficult moment of my military service, I answer that it isn’t about the battles or the tough exercises, it’s the moment we cross the threshold of a fallen soldiers’ family. You go into a home where the world has been turned upside-down and you don’t know how to fill the void.”
