young-israel-logoThe National Council of Young Israel (NCYI) today urged the United States and the international community to take action against Iran in light of recent revelations about Iran’s nuclear proliferation and the rapid advancement of its nuclear program.
NCYI First Vice President Eli Dworetsky, who recently participated in the National Jewish Leadership Advocacy Day on Iran, in Washington, D.C., organized by the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, said that the time for action has come.

“With the International Atomic Energy Agency’s recent disclosure that Iran has amassed enough low-enriched uranium to construct two nuclear weapons, it appears that the time for talk has passed, and the time for action has arrived,” said Dworetsky. “Iran’s nuclear capabilities are no longer just a concern for the State of Israel; rather, the prospect of a volatile dictator with the ability to fire nuclear weapons at will is something that should generate fear and concern throughout the rest of the civilized world. Iran is no longer just Israel’s problem; it is now everyone’s problem.”

The International Atomic Energy Agency recently released a report which found that Iran has in excess of 3,300 pounds of low-enriched uranium, which is sufficient fuel for two nuclear weapons. Iran also has more than 8,300 centrifuges, which are machines that operate at supersonic speeds to enrich the uranium needed for a nuclear bomb. By increasing the number of its centrifuges by 33% in the past seven months, Iran is able to accelerate the process of creating nuclear weapons.

During his time in Washington, Dworetsky met with several Congressional leaders who support stronger action against Iran. Dworetsky noted that although support for action against Iran seems to be universally supported in the United States Congress, a number of other issues that are dominating the political landscape appear to have pushed Iran to the back burner.

“If diplomatic overtures do not capture Iran’s attention, perhaps increased sanctions will,” said Dworetsky. “If Iran’s ability to import much-needed gasoline was suddenly curtailed due to their ongoing desire to spurn the rest of the world, the Iranian leadership might be willing to re-assess their current fixation on building weapons of mass destruction.”

Dworetsky called on both Jews and non-Jews to participate in an upcoming rally to protest Iran’s actions, and urged all synagogues and schools to join in the rally as well. The “Solidarity for Freedom in Iran” rally is scheduled for Thursday, September 24, in various locations throughout the United States. The rally will take place at its primary location at 12:00 PM in Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, near the United Nations in New York City. The rally will coincide with an appearance by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at the United Nations for the General Assembly meeting.

“With Iran’s nuclear weapons pointed towards the State of Israel and the 40% of worldwide Jewry which makes Israel their home, we cannot sit idly by and wait for disaster to strike,” said Dworetsky. “We need our world leaders to hear our voices loud and clear as we protest Iran’s hate-filled policies and anti-Israel agenda. By joining together as one unified force, we can impart upon the international community the gravity of the situation and urge them to take the necessary action to put an end to Iran’s nuclear plans.”
