idf-soldier1The National Council of Young Israel (NCYI) and the International Young Israel Movement (IYIM) – Israel Region invite you to the dedication ceremony of Hachnasas Sefer Torah #200 to the IDF Rabbinate. The event will take place on Thursday, September 8, 2011 at the Sirkin army base, outside Petach Tivka, Israel at 10:30 AM.

The 200th Sefer Torah is a groundbreaking event, as a Sefer Torah saved from the ashes of the European Holocaust will be donated as part of the project for the first time.

The celebratory ceremony will be attended by the Chief Rabbis of Israel, the Chief Rabbi of the IDF, army personnel, prominent rabbis, and community leaders. Light refreshments will be served. The Sefer Torah is dedicated in loving memory of Ruby Davidman, who was a tireless worker for the Jewish community and the Land of Israel, and who played a key role in launching the “Redeem a Sefer Torah Campaign.”

Buses will be leaving from the Kings Hotel in Jerusalem at 9:15 AM. Seats on the bus will be allocated to those who have made advance reservations. If you plan on driving in a private vehicle, we need your license plate information for security reasons.

Space is limited so please RSVP at your earliest convenience to Shelley Vogel at 02-6254983 ext. 104 or via e-mail at [email protected]

The Young Israel’s “Redeem a Sefer Torah Campaign” aims to provide the brave soldiers of the Israeli Army, Navy and Air Force with Sifrei Torah in order for them to fulfill their spiritual needs. Sifrei Torah that have fallen into disrepair are transported from North American communities, repaired through kind donations and donated to IDF bases or units. Some Sifrei Torah are written exclusively for this project.

Over the past 12 years, 199 Sifrei Torah have been donated, and the 200th Sefer Torah is one that survived the Holocaust in Romania.

  1. In good old Arafat’s time at the Mukada, there were two minyanim of Israeli soldiers. One Ashkenaz and the other Sefard. Both had sifrei Torah provided by the National Council of Young Israel. This wonderful effort is the brainchild of Rabbi Pesach Lerner, Young Israels exec v.p. Kol Hakavod !!!! Chazak Ve’amatz !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
