rabbi-pesach-lerner1The leadership of the U.S.-based nationwide Young Israel movement on Sunday urged Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to ask GOP candidates about their stance on Iran and its nuclear threat to Israel, the United States and the world.

Netanyahu is in the United States to speak at the AIPAC convention, and will meet with U.S. President Barack Obama and other officials within the framework of that gathering.

Traditionally, Israeli leaders do not question presidential candidates on their political stands before the Democratic and Republican conventions have had a chance to choose their final candidates for the presidential elections.

However, said Rabbi Pesach Lerner, executive vice president of the National Council of Young Israel, and Shlomo Z. Mostofsky, Esq., immediate past president of the movement, this year is no ordinary year.

“The United States and Israel are at a critical juncture regarding Iran and its outright defiance of international calls to cease advancement of its nuclear ambitions,” the two American Jewish leaders said. “With a presidential election looming on the horizon, it would behoove our esteemed prime minister and the Israeli government to make absolutely certain that each of the candidates are acutely aware of the grave threat that a nuclear Iran poses to Israel, the United States and the entire international community.”

The two men also questioned why some have underscored the political sensitivity of such discussions, and advised Netanyahu to avoid them.

“With the future of the State of Israel at stake, it is particularly perplexing that people would choose to put partisan politics above the need to ensure the safety and security of our Israeli brethren,” they noted. “We need to be focused on properly addressing the danger that Iran presents to the world, not worrying about petty political perceptions.”

  1. Why the overkill? Romney, Santorum and Gingrich have been extremely clear, repeatedly, on the issue. So has Ron Paul. Are they all of a sudden going to change their tune to Bibi?

  2. Why are we expecting politics to be the savior of Israel? What ever happened to emuna and all those tehilim proclaiming Hashem the only shomer Yisroel? Lets grow old young Israel!!!
