Young Man Who Attacked Rav Shteinman Known Not to Be Normal

rav-shteinmanA lunatic who had the audacity to physically attack Maran Rav Aharon Leib Shteinman shlit”a at his home on Rechov Chazon Ish in Bnei Brak last night is not a typical “avreich,” as media outlets have been reporting, nor is he stable, and he has been known to say outrageous things, sources tell Israel.

The 28-year-old married young man and father from Modiin Illit has been known for uncontrolled behavior, sources indicate.

The attack on the gadol hador took place as votes in the municipal elections across Eretz Yisroel were being counted nationwide.

The attacker, it seems, entered through a window and then approached the gadol hador, grabbed him and began to shake him forcefully, while yelling and saying he had come “to get nekamah.” It is not clear if he said, “I will kill you,” or other statements being attributed to him.

The man was acting on his own and not with the support of any person or group, contrary to a number of reports in the Israeli media.

Family and others ran into the room, held down the assailant, and called police, who arrested him.

Rav Shteinman’s doctor is running a series of tests to determine how seriously he was injured by the goon.

Judge Shmuel Melamed in Tel Aviv extended the remand of the attacker until tomorrow afternoon and ordered that he undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

Meanwhile, Rav Chaim Kanievsky called for an asifas hisorerus to be held in light of the unspeakable actions of this individual. The event is scheduled for this evening at the corner of Rechov Harav Landau and Rechov Nechemya in Bnei Brak.

  1. It doesn’t really matter if it was related to any particular group. Something he heard made him want to go to Bnei Brak to attack R’ Shteinman

  2. The problem is that mental illness or instability is more widespread (yes, even in the frum world) than we care to admit. Due to the intense stigma, issues are ignored or minimized until it is too late. The price of not properly dealing with mental problems is steep in both the frum world (e.g. widespread chinuch issues, widespread shalom bayis issues, in addition to a story like the one above) and in the secular world (mass shootings, etc.). We need to take care of our most vulnerable, and this is what happens when we care more about what the neighbors may say than making sure our children are well-cared-for.

  3. Moshe you hit the nail on the head. The irresponsible and hate filled rhetoric during this last election is what sent him over the edge.

  4. Moshe
The acts of a Meshugener should not be a basis for any conclusion or understanding of the situation. The guy is a stark raving lunatic V’su Lo Midi/

  6. At the atzeres held in Modi’in Illit last night, the Morah D’Osra Rav Kessler shlit’a repeated more than once that who the person is is not as relevant as the fact that we ourselves have to examine our deeds and make a kabala to be marbe chesed, etc. (each person at his own level).
