zisalekThere hasn’t been a dull moment for the Zisalek Ice Cream Shop in Geulah, Yerushalayim, since the day it opened. This week, days after Rav Gavriel Pappenheim of the Badatz of the Eidah Hachreidus issued criticism of the hashgacha of Rav Rubin for granting supervision to the Zisalek ice cream store, the Badatz pulled back from its sharp condemnation.

As we have reported in the past, the Badatz of the Eidah, several years ago, established a vaad for the Geulah neighborhood to ensure levels of ruchniyus. A month ago, the Zisalek store, selling ice cream and other sweets, opened. The storeowner, Yaakov Halperin, who intends to expand to a national chain of ice cream stores, took the hashgacha of the Badatz of Rav Rubin. Sources say that there was pressure from certain segments for Halperin to drop Rav Rubin’s hashgacha and take the Badatz, but Halperin didn’t react to the pressure and the public showed indifference to the whole thing. Halperin had been facing problems from a few fringe individuals who looked to make problems for the popular store.

Halperin agreed to meet with those protesting the store – allegedly for tznius and hashkafa reasons – and agreed to the following to appease them:

1. The store won’t sell on Erev Shabbos after 1 p.m. ice cream that can be eaten immediately, such as ice cream cones, and will only sell at that point packaged ice cream that can be bought for families for Shabbos.

2. The store will not open on Motzoei Shabbos.

3. The store will close at 10:30 p.m. each night.

The neighborhood vaad wanted to have the store hire men to sell to men and women to sell to women, but that request was rejected.

WHY IS THIS? Are people fleishik from early morning Friday cholent?

  3. most of what bothers the residents of Geulah is: the soft ice cream because……… people are eating it on the street and the Gemorah says that “one who eats on the street is compared to a dog” we don’t need 2 legged dogs roaming around Geulah

    have a nice Shabbos friends

  4. why are you so angry? do you own the store? perhaps if U lived in Geulah you would understand the problem and dis comfort the store is causing to all of us

  5. #1 A new spokesperson for the Geulah neighborhood has finally arisen. Personally, I cant wait to get to try out this new ice cream the next time in Yerushalayim.

  6. #2 This is probably to stop a ‘hang-out’ from ever materializing. Seminary girls go to Geula on Fridays as well as yeshiva guys. If they do not sell the soft -eat-it-right-there ice cream the boys/girls will not mingle???

  7. there is no store in geulla that sells men to men women to woman
    that’s ridiculous.
goto uri’s pizza. no women working.
go across the street to the chamutzim store.
walk up to the next pizza shop or shtizels which isn’t even eida…
this is a bad eye for the eida

  8. it’s assur to have internet in geula what are you talking about?
PLEASE publish the name of the RAV who matters your use of internet in geulla. please.

  9. Its difficult to find a single family in the whole of Geulah who want this Ice Cream store in Geulah, please Hashem get it out of here.

That’s right; God has nothing better to do than to get rid of an ice cream store that’s making you uncomfortable.

“Don’t worry about world peace, or children starving in Africa, or HIV – just get rid of this ice cream shop that’s threatening to tear apart the moral fabric of our community.”

  10. “Its difficult to find a single family in the whole of Geulah who want this Ice Cream store in Geulah, please Hashem get it out of here.”

If that’s truly the case, then the shop will close for lack of customers.

    The Wolf

  11. The Wolf, as usual, gets right to the point. If the residents of Geulah don’t want the store there, who is buying the ice cream? Are hilonim invading the neighborhood for the specific purpose of creating a michshol for the long-suffering residents, or could it be that a lot of people in Geulah really like their ice cream and don’t care about extremeists’ opinions?

As far as eating on the street, if you’re standing still in a clean place, no problem. Walking along eating isn’t allowed. If they’re worried about the boys and girls hanging out, why blame the ice cream store? If they want to hang out, they’ll find someplace to do it. The only thing that will work is educating them so that they wouldn’t want to.

  12. Pray tell why the Badatz haven’t tried to limit the Falafel stores. Ever seen someone eating a Falafel in the street in Geula? If you haven’t you are blind. So, you can buy a Falafel after 1pm erev shabbos but not an ice cream.
