ahmadinejad“Up close, he looks more like a seed merchant than someone who is running a nuclear program,” the head of the Knesset Economic Affairs Committee MK Carmel Shama Hacohen (Likud) said Thursday, after a brief encounter with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development currently being held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Shama Hacohen was making a pun, as the Hebrew word for nuclear (gar’in) also means “seed”.

Shama Hacohen, who is a member of the Israeli delegation to the conference, said the Israeli participants were seated in close proximity to the Iranian delegation because of the alphabetical seating arrangement, which placed Israel and Iran’s representatives essentially right next to each other.

“To the surprise of the Foreign Ministry officials, when the lunatic and his people rose from their seats, they broke with tradition and passed by us rather than go through a detour,” Shama Hacohen wrote on his Facebook page.

“The megalomaniac from Iran took it a step further: Despite the sign that says ‘Israel’ on my desk and the lapel pin on my jacket, he nodded and smiled toward us.”

  1. Such trust building opportunities as this one in Rio should not be mocked. Sitting with someone in a spirit of mutual curiosity, respect and kindness can do wonders. The schechina cannot rest where there is enmity, hatred and strife. The word “Sanhedrin” in ancient Greek means “Sitting together.” The Johnny Mercer Maxim of international affairs must dominate. i.e. Accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative, hold on to the affirmative and don’t mess with Mr.In Between.

    I repeat…

There are many calenders in the world – Jewish 5772; Christian/Gregorian 2012; Muslim 1432; Iranian Nuclear Enrichment Red Line Soon ??? The divine timetable will trump them all. G-d does not want a war to break out in the Middle East. The good people of Persia and the Holy Land should be able to live in peace in the coming years. A marriage of the nations was prophesied to unfold. All good relationships progress in stages. I can imagine driving on a road from Jerusalem to Tehran by 2019. Israeli and Iranian tourists could visit each other’s land in friendship by 2013. It would be wonderful if Iran; Saudi Arabia; Israel and the USA all played off in Group D of the 2022 Qatar World Cup. The real potential of the region must be allowed to bear fruit. The circuit breaker is for a reconvened NPT Conference to be held in Jerusalem at the start of 2013. (Jan. 28th is a good date BTW. The conference only needs to be four days. The long term program can be worked out and discussed beforehand. The peace deliberations at Wesphalia to end the Thirty Years War involved set piece large meetings and smaller gatherings combined with the lines of communication being opened. The crucial step right now is getting the two most important guests, i.e. Israel and Iran, to agree to attend. I know the : When; Where; Why; Who; How; Duration; Intention; Flow and Format.)

Will past foes lay down their swords and allow another paradigm to emerge ? Is Isaiah’s prophecy applicable now, one hundred years in the future or not ever as it is a myth ? I am sure I know what G-d wants to see unfold.

Prayer, vigilance and right action should see us all through.

P.S. Well done to the Matsav editors for posting this story.
