A source within the Toms River Police Dept. reports that the the Township is actively enforcing the ordinance which restricts the use of a residential property for business purposes. This includes POOL RENTALS. They are going as far as to monitoring the Lakewood weekly publications. If you listed your pool rental in the BP Weekly or such you may be fined. Have a great summer.

  1. Good for them. Ever hear of something called “chesed”? Not everything in life is about the almighty dollar.

  2. Here’s an idea for a workaround:
The use of the pool is FREE, however is conditional upon renting a towel for X dollars.

    • Interesting. But then you will have to report it in order to pay taxes on that income. Similar to a waiter who has to report his tips to the friendly folks at the IRS.

      • I doubt that the income generated is enough to legally obligate reporting. Especially if the “towel rental business” will be run by a person who has zero or negligible other income.
Also, remember that the profit of the towel rentals is offset by the costs: water, detergent, electricity, wash machine depreciation, labor (paid to a child who earns little or no other income) etc.

          • I’m not a legal expert, and my idea was just a theoretical suggestion.

Also, the township might have other regulations about needing a business license. For example, in some cities, it’s illegal for kids to set up a lemonade stand to sell lemonade. So if you want to set up a “towel rental business”, you need to find out the legal ins and outs.
