A $1.2 billion drinking-water project announced last week will include construction of a 2-mile tunnel between Kensico Reservoir and an ultraviolet treatment plant in Eastview.
The finished tunnel will carry as much as 2.6 billion gallons of water a day in a 27-foot diameter tunnel between 400 and 500 feet underground, the New York City Department of Environmental Protection said in a news release.
The project, which is expected to begin in five years, with tunnel work commencing around 2025 with an anticipated finish date around 2035, is the largest water tunneling project in Westchester since the 1940s, DEP said.
