lakewood-policeAuthorities are investigating the shooting death of a 17-year-old young man who was found on New Hampshire Avenue near Woodlake Manor in Lakewood, NJ, after a second victim, a 16-year-old male, came to Kimball Medical Center about 12:15 a.m. for treatment of gunshot wounds, said Deputy Chief Michael Mohel of the Ocean County Prosecutors Office.

Hospital officials alerted police that they had a shooting victim, Mohel said.

No one in the area of shooting reported hearing gunshots and the first indication that there was a shooting came when hospital staff alerted police, said Lakewood Police Lt. William Addison.

Lakewood Patrolman Michael Marzocca responded to the hospital where the victim, Fernando Reyes, 16, of Rachel Court, told police that he was with Enrique Garcia, 17, of Woodlake Manor Drive, when they were shot. Reyes gave police the location of the shooting and officers went to the area to search for the other victim, Mohel said.

Lakewood Police went to the area described by Reyes and found Garcia about 25 feet from the roadway at the border of the Woodlake Manor condominium complex and New Hampshire Avenue, Mohel said. Dr. Donato Santangelo of the Ocean County Medical Examiner’s office pronounced Garcia dead at the scene at 2:10 a.m., Mohel said. Garcia had a gunshot wound to his head, Mohel said.

Reyes was transferred the trauma center at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune with a gunshot wound to his torso and arm, Mohel said. He is in stable condition, Mohel said. It is unknown at this time if Reyes’ wounds were caused by one or two gunshots, Mohel said.

The motive for the shooting remains under investigation and authorities said it was too early to say if there was any indication that the shooting was gang related.

Authorities are seeking information and asking the public’s assistance, Mohel said.
