It’s getting extremely difficult to live in New York if you’re making less than six figures, according to a new analysis from Bloomberg. The impact is being felt by those who live alone and it’s taking place in areas that were previously seen as affordable.

Solo renters in popular Brooklyn neighborhoods like Prospect Heights, Brooklyn Heights and Cobble Hill now need to be making at least $100,000 per year to live there, a dramatic change from just five years ago. The lower east side of Manhattan has also followed suit.

People in Manhattan living alone would need a gross income of $115,800, which is more than twice the city median of $57,782. Renters in East Flatbush need to earn 33% more than they did in 2014 to live alone, with that figure coming in at $68,000.

  1. Therefore you are either very rich or very poor to live in NYC. What a chiddush!!! Been this way since Abeleh was Mayor. There is no more middle class – get used to it. Let the genaiveh rule. Let protekzia rule.

    • Exactly. There is a tremendous difference between the Haves and the Have-nots. I can barely pay my rent and tuitions even after scholarships and yet my neighbors are building monster in-your-face mansions with 2 Mercedes and 2 BMW’s in the driveway. What’s worse, those that Have are always lecturing us poor shleppers how we have to be responsible and how not to do this and not to do that and not take a break and not send our kids to Camp and not buy this and not buy that and get rid of your car, etc… Only the Haves are entitled to enjoy a normal life. The rest can go to hell. What gives?

  2. Who in their right mind would want to live in NY??? The worst weather, too cold in the winter, too hot and muggy in the summer. Garbage strewn all over especially in Brooklyn. Humid air to breath or choke and it always smells. The people are loud and nasty. Traffic is horrendous and people don’t know how to drive. That’s why you see signs all over stating “I Luv NY”. It’s psychological propaganda to make you think that you love New York. Rabboisay, there is nothing to love about New York or New Jersey for that matter!

  3. People who live in New York don’t know that there is actual life outside of their smelly state. They think that all roads have tolls and that there are as many bad drivers who create terrible traffic jams everywhere else. New Yorkers only find out about the rest of the world around them when they leave New York even for a short vacation. New York is one of the worst places to live. I know because I took my family and moved away. Far away. Boruch Hashem!!!
