115 Rabbonim Sign Letter Protesting NYC’s Attempt to Regulate Bris Milah

metzitzah-letter-august-2012-small[View the letter here.] Mayor Michael Bloomberg has said that the practice of metzitzah b’peh, which is under review by the New York City Health Department and was the subject of a recent hearing, is potentially dangerous to newborns.

A Health Department spokesperson has said that “There is no safe way to perform oral suction on any open wound in a newborn. To protect infant health, parents considering ritual Jewish circumcision need to know that circumcision should only be performed under sterile conditions, like any other procedures that create open cuts, whether by mohelim or medical professionals.”

As the global war on bris milah continues unabated, 115 rabbonim, primarily from the tri-state area but from other locales as well, issued a statement that Torah Jews will stand strong in the face of opposition to the covenant handed down to Avrohom Avinu by G-d Himself.

The rabbonim express shock that the Department of Health of New York City is looking to regulate the religious practice of bris milah, which has been passed down from generation to generation.

As the Health Department seeks to require parents to sign a waver before having metzitzah b’peh performed, the letter points to “lies and misrepresentation” and episodes of children who have become ill following a bris as proof to support their campaign against metzitzah b’peh.

The letter decries the effort of a government body to interfere in religious practice.

The letter makes clear that “this is only the commencement of their efforts [to regulate bris milah],” stating that, ultimately, efforts will be made to halt bris milah altogether unless voices are raised to protest governmental meddling in religious practice.

The letter asks all Yidden to raise their voices and not be silent in the face of this attack on the mitzvah of milah k’halacha, adding that it is prohibited to engage or follow the Health Departments regulations in this regard.

The letter was formally issued on Tuesday.

  1. It’s pretty straightforward. The Gedolim are unequivocally stating that we must continue Metitza B’Peh and refuse to sign any Dept. of Health consent forms.

And this decree issued by the Gedolim equally applies to Mohelim and parents.

  2. If “115 rabbonim send a letter deploring and criticizing the actions of an American civil (read goyish) authority why on earth could it not be written it in a language that those goyim could easily understand?

  3. “Hashem is hinting to us to get out of America”

So are you packing your bags and, if so, where are you going? I hear that Israel is a good place for charedim to live; the chiloni locals will make you very welcome.

Just be grateful that you currently have the privilege and the zchus to live in the goldeneh medinah.

In all the thousands of year of galus no other country has ever welcomed and nurtured Jews as has the United States of America.

Just learn to be grateful for what you have.

READ TODAY’S REPORT ABOUT THE ARREST OF RABBI CH. KALMANOWITZ.
MAYBE WE SHOULD LIVE DURING THE DAY IN ERETZ YISROEL (after all milah should be done during the day) AND IN AMERICA AT NIGHT (after all the zionist kgb apparently work at night as their predecesors in the ussr)
