learning-torahEretz Yisroel’s 2,000 yeshivas and kollelim boast a total of 125,500 students learning 20,790,000 hours during the course of the regular sedorim, according to a survey released at the start of Shloshes Yemei Hagboloh. The survey, conducted by Yated Ne’eman of Eretz Yisroel in cooperation with the Union of Yeshiva Managers, reveals that 30,000 students occupy the benches of 275 yeshivos ketanos while 35,500 students – including 8,000 foreign students – study at the various yeshivos gedolos in Eretz Hakodesh.Sixty thousand avreichim, including 5,000 from abroad, attend all-day kollelim. 4,200 learn at half-day kollelim and 200 learn at kollelim geared to produce dayonim and rabbonim.

Since the typical kollel operates 140 hours per month, the 64,200 avreichim total 9 million hours of Torah learning every month. At yeshivas, students typically learn at least 180 hours per month, bringing the total for the 65,500 yeshiva gedoloh and yeshiva ketanoh students to 11.8 million hours per month. Added to these totals are innumerable hours of study outside the official sedorim. These figures also do not include significant numbers of Torah students who are not registered with the government.

Despite all of the difficulties and trials it encounters, the Torah world is flourishing as botei medrash continue to fill in accordance with the promise recorded in the Torah: “for it will not be forgotten by their descendants” (Devorim. 31:21).
