A 14-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of a hate crime Friday, a week after a rabbi was allegedly punched near his San Diego synagogue, police said.

The boy was booked into Juvenile Hall on battery and hate crime charges, San Diego police Lt. Shawn Takeuchi said.

Rabbi Yonatan Halevy told the Union-Tribune that the assault occurred on Oct. 10 as he and his father were walking toward the synagogue. A teenager rode past them on his bike, Halevy said, then abruptly turned around and brought a clenched fist down on top of the rabbi’s head.

  1. Why didn’t the victim fight back? Don’t tell me he couldn’t take on a 14 year old assailant. To be don lechaf zechus, it’s possible that the little bastard just hit and run away, though. At any rate, the old-country submition-approach doesn’t work at this time and place, and arguably failed back in Europe but was nevertheless used bedieved since there weren’t any other practical options in that time and place. There is only one way to stop the physical attacks – that is by using our G-d given right to self-defense. Boruch H, we live in a country with a second amendment – take full advantage of your freedom. When you refuse to fight back when physically attacked, you present Jews as a soft target and therefore encourage even more physical attacks.
