snowNew Jersey was not hit as hard as some areas in the blizzard overnight, but officials still warned that roads were covered with ice and snow and were not safe.

Many areas saw in excess of a foot of a accumulation. CBS 2 Meteorologist John Elliott said River Vale saw 15 inches, Verona and Chatham 14, Highland Lakes 13.2, and Bloomingdale 12.8.

West Milford, Hillsdale and Scotch Plains also all got more than a foot of snow. Cedar Grove residents woke up to about 10 inches of snow Saturday morning.

CBS 2’s Don Dahler reported salt trucks were on the roads in River Vale, but the roads were covered with ice beneath the snow and motorists were advised not to use them.

Newark had been projected to get up to a foot of snow or possibly more but received about 5 or 6 inches.

About 5 inches fell on Jersey City and about 6 inches fell at Newark Liberty International Airport, which was closed overnight.

The airport remained shut down Saturday morning and was trying to get open by noon, 1010 WINS’ Glenn Schuck reported on CBS 2. The airport technically opened at 3:30 a.m., but there were no planes to get anyone out.

Every flight at the airport until noon was canceled.
