Chana Nachenberg, a survivor of the devastating suicide bombing that occurred at the Sbarro restaurant in Yerushalayim in 2001, has tragically succumbed to her injuries after spending over two decades in a coma.

Her passing occurred on Wednesday evening at Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv, marking another painful loss in the aftermath of the attack, with the death toll now standing at 16.

R’ Yitzchok, Chana’s grieving father, shared the heartbreaking news of her passing, saying, “Our beloved daughter, Chana Tova Feiner Nachenberg, has departed from this world after almost 22 years of unyielding heroism. She was on the verge of turning 53 in just a month’s time. For 21 years and nine months, she remained unconscious, trapped in a coma at Reut Hospital in Tel Aviv. Three weeks ago, she was transferred to Ichilov Hospital, where she ultimately passed away.”

At the time of the attack, Chana was a 31-year-old woman enjoying a meal at the Sbarro restaurant alongside her three-year-old daughter, who miraculously escaped physical harm during the horrifying incident.

The tragic event unfolded on August 9, 2001, when a terrorist entered the bustling Sbarro restaurant on Rechov Yaffo in Yerushalayim during the busy lunch hour. Concealed within his bag was a deadly explosive device. He activated the bomb, triggering a devastating blast that ripped through the establishment.

The repercussions of the attack were harrowing, as 16 innocent lives were mercilessly taken, including the lives of eight children. Additionally, another 140 individuals were left injured, bearing the physical and emotional scars of that day.

While some of the perpetrators involved in planning the attack were initially sentenced to lengthy prison terms, they were later released as part of the controversial Shalit deal. Abdullah Barghouti, the individual responsible for constructing the bomb, remains incarcerated in Israel, serving 67 consecutive life sentences. Another significant figure in the attack, Ahlam Ahmad al-Tamimi, who orchestrated and facilitated its execution, subsequently reporting on it for Arab media, was also released from prison as part of the Shalit exchange and currently holds a position as a broadcaster in Jordanian media.
